Alonso Gonzales pounded his fist on the desk. “What are we waiting for,” he demanded. “My brother’s in enemy hands RIGHT NOW, enduring who knows what, while—“
Anastasia Godunov reached over to place a comforting hand on his arm. “We know,” she said in a small voice, “but, the thing is, we don’t know WHERE he is, and without that there’s nothing we can do.”
The nine-year-old slumped forward, any vestige of defiance gone. “He’s all I have,” he murmured brokenly.
Anastasia’s twin, Anja, set down the object she’d been holding and met Alonso’s tortured gaze. “We’ll find him,” she promised. I CAN’T IMAGINE LIFE IF WE DON’T, the seven-year-old thought.

Mom just called; Grandma's been taken to the hospital to be admitted for testing; symptoms seem to be indicative of stroke (apparently, she's been suffering them for the past few days: numbness in her arm that moved down her leg, something similar on right side of her face [I seem to remember hearing or reading about something like this; I go now to the Net to find out if what I think I remember is correct {it may have been from that book by the neuroscientist who suffered a stroke}])

I sure hope your G'ma is ok, Jaymee! I think I read about meds that can reverse the effects of a stroke...Good thoughts.

Thanks, VM
Just called the people at Compeer to let them know. Since Momwill be out of town that weekend, Georgette and I may not be able to go to the picnic as planned. We'll just have to see (and, regardless what the outcome, I need to let Georgette know - I have no idea what her understanding of such matters might be)
Time to exercise

Grandma's in a room, and I've just talked to her. Sometimes there's a long pause before she answers, but other than that everything's fine.
I actually called about ten minutes or so ago, but she didn't know how to answer the phone.
As for Mom, she's on her way back to the office. Talk about a long day :(

Me – I’ve thought of a question.
Mom – What was that?
Me – What did the doctors say?
Mom - …that her symptoms were indicative of a stroke, and that certain tests had to be done… they didn’t comment on the EKG, but they said the CAT scan didn’t show anything—but if it was the kind of stroke they’re thinking, it wouldn’t be picked up by [that, but rather] the MRI.
Me – What kind do they suspect.
Mom – They’re thinking she suffered a stroke that affected the cerebellum… she’s exhibiting some weakness, and there was some talk of having physical therapy look at her tomorrow.

I also asked Mom how events played out today. Apparently, Grandma was unsteady, but refused to go to the hospital when Michael encouraged her to. As a result, he called Mom before she got in to work. She went to the office briefly to delegate a few tasks, went down to Womelsdorf, and told her in no uncertain terms that she was going to the hospital [that’s where her telling Mom she was bossy came in]. The rest, as they say, is history—Mom didn’t get out of the hospital until around 7:30, at which time she went back to the office. “And I may have to go in tomorrow.” It’s a holiday, but (a) she’s on call, and (b) she did spend a majority of her day at the hospital with Grandma.

Just wrote up a version of "Village Streets," one that's as incomplete as the rest (works for a rough draft)
======
“Remember,” the first voice hissed, “just find the boy and grab him. Don’t stop to engage unless you have to.”
The young man nodded his understanding. “I’ll be in and out so quick, they won’t even know what hit them.”
Just shy of five minutes later, he sprinted out the door of the palace, clutching a small child to his breast. “Well done, Julian,” the other congratulated before noticing the blood on the child’s clothes. “Might I inquire what happened,” he demanded, then thought better of it. “That can wait until later.”
“He wouldn’t come quietly,” the young man muttered sullenly.

I hope grandma's OK and if it is a stroke the functions usually start to come back gradually to a point if lost. And you're lucky you didn't break a tooth, the rest will mend happily with no help from a dentist.

Just talked to Grandma
Virgil and Rob visited earlier, and Anita called
Mom's with her now
She's got at least one test tomorrow
She's sick of being there[it made me laugh, as I can't think of anyone who enjoys being in hospital]
Mom stopped at the store to buy some things I needed [I didn't order from Zweier's this week due to Financial concerns]
Dinner was a tuna sub from Subway and one of their white chocolate macadamia nut cookies [Mom and Edward went there after their bike ride, and she called beforehand to ask if I wanted anything; she also got me a bag of chips, which are in the "goodie basket" I use for my centerpiece, along with the bananas she got at the store]
I was engaged in two projects earlier (three, actually): writing a book list, rearranging books on the shelf, and putting a book's binding together [I was reading in bed, where it got caught on something, and the pages came out; I have two more books to "fix"]

Thanks, David. She seems lucid enough, and from what I’m hearing the cause of the stroke could be worse than the thing itself (the MRI did indeed show she’d had a stroke to the left side of her brain, which is why her right side’s affected). The doctors think she may have a cardiac problem (the test tomorrow is most likely in relation to that.) They’re basing their conclusions on the fact that the stroke didn’t occur yesterday, but rather anywhere from two weeks ago. They’re thinking she might have atrial fibrillation, which as Mom explained to me is a racing heart that leads to blood clots .
The lip’s still tender, but I’m about to go take Mom[‘s advice and put ice on it (I tried that last night, but it hurt too much). And while I ice my face I’ll relisten to “Dawn’s Prelude.”

Thanks, Lesley.
Last night when I called Mom to say "good night," Uncle Michael answered. "Who is this," he asked (you know, as a joke [our warped humor]. Whoever you want it to be, I told him (he just laughed, and repeated what I'd said for Mom). Apparently, she'd stopped briefly by his house.
Speaking of Mom, she's taking an early lunch break today so she can get to the hospital for an update. If she finds out anything, she'll let me know.

Mom's on her way to Michael's. She did indeed visit Grandma at lunchtime. Seems she had a bad night. Also, as her blood pressure's still up, her medication was changed.
Dinner was sausage (two of the four piecesMom dropped off yesterday). Lunch was a turkey and cheese sandwich. Tomorrow I might make some salads (after washing the dishes first).
I'm not sure if I'll call Granma today. I'd hate to interrupt anything, like I did last night, and I don't want to keep her from her rest.

In the end, I decided to call Grandma to let her know I'm thinking of her. We discussed how she's tired all the time, as well as the hot weather. It wasn't a long conversation, as I could tell she was struggling to stay awake.

I’ve spoken with my great aunt Janice, who contends that, while my fami,ly is stubborn (this includes Grandma, Michael and Mom), SHE doesn’t have any such trait (her sister’s in the hospital, and she’s hurt by a comment like that? [I’m not sure exactly what Mom said, but it was something about how Janice is just as stubborn—something I kind of reinforced, but then backed away from, as I’m afraid of upsetting Janice and thereby ending up on the “sht list.”] Given the way she reacts to stuff, it’s a wonder she’s apprised of the situation [then again, had Mom NOT called her, Janice would have had a fit for being left in the dark. IN FACT, SHE’S THE ONE WHO A,LWAYS THINKS SHE WAS THE LAST TO HEAR NEWS [if I was to be technical, I could point out that I learned of the stroke AFTER her—though I don’t think she’s been told as much as me. Otherwise, she’d know that her belief that Grandma’s fatigue is caused by her thyroid meds being too low is a croc of applesauce {{First,while the loss of one’s thyroid creates fatigue, she only exhibited extreme tiredness BEFORE she was allowed on the meds. Since taking them, her energy level’s increased. It’s only within the past few months that she’s more tired than usual which, if the cause of her stroke is indeed a heart problem, is then understandable. So, her contention about the thyroid hormones is VERY hard to believe. Of course, she thinks she knows it all—even though she has no medical degree or anything. Yes, people are entitled to an oopinionn, but with her it isn’t really an opinion anymore—half the time, her “opinion” sounds utterly ridiculous and wouldn’t stand up to even the most basic logic.}

Every family has one - the person whose pride is more important than the news. Every office does too, actually.
Not much you can do except to repeat to yourself, thank goodness I'm not her.

The sad thing is, she’s alienating herself more than she already has (I would point out that she decided to live away from the family, but she expects to be in on everything. She’s got to be the first to know something, or she’s all indignant.)
I see her repeating her actions of four years ago, when her youngest sister, Jean, was hospitalized with an infection. (Let’s reviewJ
- Whereas Grandma visited every day, Janice visited only once (and by then, Jean was in rough shape indeed. Had she (pardon the language hear) rearranged her damned schedule, or dropped it altogether, she’d have been able to see her “baby sis” one last time before a raging infection took her life.
- When the doctors summoned the family to the hospital, Janice was “too busy” to attend (initially, Jean was still hanging on). Grandma, the middle sister, had to make ALL the decisions. It was she who decided to remove the machines keeping Jean alive, knowing full well there was no point in prolonging things; it was she who went up to the nursing home where Jean’s things were, who took them home and sorted through them, and who later took a majority of the items back up there. It was she who found something for Jean to be buried in, she who made funeral arrangements… I could go on and on, but it would take too long, and my fingers are getting tired.
- Janice WAS GOING to come the day after Jean died, but then she didn’t because she learned the funeral wasn’t until Monday (if I remember correctly, she died on a Tuesday; Janice didn’t drive down until Saturday, or was it Friday? Not that it matters – by that time, everything was arranged. Janice was then upset because she planned on taking charge and running the show.)
- She was, however, there at the meeting with the minister over the weekend (at which time she was REALLY inappropriate.) A highlight: “I just want everyone to know I gave Jean all her stamps, and all her stationery.” (Her husband wasn’t much better, butting in with: “Yeah, and she wrote her a letter every Sunday.”)
- At the funeral itself, Janice continued her unruly behavior, accusing Grandma of “yelling around” at the cemetery (the exact opposite was true: Grandma was so quiet the funeral director was concerned, and so led her away from the grave. Janice further claimed that “everyone” was asking her what was wrong with Grandma (at this, something in her seemed to snap, and she retorted something to the effect that, unless “everyone” had lived the week she had, then they had no right to judge her.)
- Janice was only concerned about the mone y, that Jean’s insurance payment wasn’t enough to pay for a tombstone (this is when I write about how much richer in money Janice is. She’s one of those people who’s loathe to part with a single cent more than she has to, although there’s absolutely NO reason for her to save it. She and Bill have more money than they could possibly know what to do with [it’s amazing to me how two people can be raised in the same environment aned turn out so differently].
