10/2 - EXCLUSIVE ONLINE OFFER
======
Mom’s going to look into other Cable options, as when she put in my address, the Digital Starter wasn’t available.
Mom: …all that came up was the 64, which is the price you were quoted. And maybe that’s the route you’ll have to go. But we’ll put it off till tomorrow so I can research exactly what’s out there.

10/3 - AWAKE OR ASLEEP
======
The question was, had I been truly awake at the time, or had I fallen asleep? Well, I don’t exactly know—but here’s what happened:
I was in high school at the time, and had a morbid fear of authority figures—though, judging by my behavior, you’d never have guessed. My equipment was constantly breaking down and, due to my angry outbursts, it was assumed I broke the machines every time.
Anyway, on the night in question I was in my bedroom. Once again, my Braille Lite had malfunctioned. That I was worried is without question, but all I really remember is the raised voice of Mrs. Garrett coming from the living room.
It was so real to me that I rushed from my bedroom out to the living room, expecting her to be there—which, of course, she wasn’t. But it makes me wonder… what, exactly, went on there?

ALL SHE SAID WAS MY NAME AND, GIVEN WHAT I'VE READ, THE EXPLANATION MIGHT BE (AT LEAST ONE IS) THAT I ENTERED AN ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS FOR A BIT

HELLO, MONKEY
======
A maintenance guy was up about the TV. As it was close to the end of the day for him, he’ll have to come back tomorrow to mount it on the wall.
I must say, I wasn’t impressed—he comes in, asks where the TV is, then asks who put the marks on the wall and why… I sat at the kitchen table thinking, ‘you do know how to read, right?’ I mean, the note’s quite straightforward. Maybe Michael should have done what he was tempted to, and addressed it to “monkey”!

‘I swear my computer’s possessed,’ I thought as I pushed in the keyboard. I’d just clicked on yet another site about ghost stories, when suddenly I was thrown off the Internet.’That hasn’t happened in a while.’

DIGITAL STARTER - 10/4
======
It doesn’t make sense, but through AllConnect, I can get the Digital Starter for approximately $40/6 months, then the price goes up to $64.90. It asked when I’d like it installed, and I told Mom to put me in for Monday, October 10 between 1-5. Tomorrow, I should get a call clarifying and confirming everything.

HOW CUTE!
======
Our maintenance guys are named Tom and Jerry. Yep, just like in the cartoons. I remember hearing the one administrator say to the other the one day a year or two ago, “Tom and Jerry are out for the day.”
Jerry’s the one who mounted the TV on the wall, and apparently his daughter knows me: “She’s affiliated with IU-13 or Quest? You ever been to either of those places?”

10/5 - LONELY
======
I called Anita last night, and we were talking for a bit. She spoke of how hard it is to move on after her mother’s death: “I thought she’d live forever,” and of how fshe can’t seem to accept it: “I keep telling myself she’s on a trip.” She also mentioned how her mother “just wasn’t right anymore” after four of her brothers passed. I just sat and listened, about the only thing one can really do when such topics come up. It’s apparent she needs someone to talk to; she spends the majority of her day in the house with no one for company [EXCEPT FOR THE CAT]: she’s not allowed to drive due to health problems, and Charlie works so much…

MOULTING
======
I don’t know why the thought never occurred to me before. But as of this morning, I decided to look up “moulting in parakeets.” I learned about complete and partial moults—never knew there were two kinds—and about pinfeathers—sounds really painful. Poor Ethan!

UNFORESEEN [SEEMS A LOT OF THAT IS HAPPENING LATELY]
======
Mom forgot to bring a DVD with her so we could have at least tried out the DVD player in the TV. Unless something unforeseen happens, she’ll bring one over tomorrow night.
Speaking of unforeseen, last night I didn’t even think she was coming at all. She’d told me earlier she was cooking and doing chores around the house, but that she was planning on leaving around 6:30 or 7. But as time passed, I began to wonder, and called her—but got no response. But at 9:10, the buzzer sounded, and I was upset because I felt she should have told me if she was going to be late: ‘she’s going to get it,’ I thought as I stalked over to the intercom.
She came bearing gifts: a wallet she bought for me in Rhehoboth Beach, and several containers of food—three with one slice of pizza each, and two small bowls of potato soup. She also helped reconnect the landline—Jerry must have unplugged it when he mounted the TV on the wall—the phone jack’s in back of the end table. She also moved the end table back to where it had been, and logged on to the Internet so she could help me order my Cable.

10/6 - ICE BATH
======
Mom hurt her leg the other day, and the one night told me she was preparing an ice bath for it. And last night she explained that, “the purpose of this is so that I can do range of motion.” She also explained to me that her chiropractor prescribed the ice bath—this made no sense to me: why would her chiropractor be treating her ankle? But my confusion was temporary as she added, “I think it’s really my lower back…” And so she goes to the chiropractor again tonight.

DENIAL
======
When I moved out two years ago, I told Mom over and over I didn’t want TV service. I even went so far as to say I didn’t miss it. And, in hospital—July 2010—I refused to watch any.
One reason I balked, apart from the large amount of space the TV took up, was I didn’t want to pay a great expense for Cable. After all, Mom wound up switching to Direct because Comcast was too expensive—and that’s just not an option for me.
But when Mom asked if I’d buy service if I bought a flat screen, I said I would. And when I was looking into my options, I realized I did in fact miss television.

IT WAS THE MENTION OF DISNEY CHANNEL THAT DID IT

JIM
======
I called Comcast this morning, and a good thing I did—turns out the delivery guy’s still coming today between 12:30 and 3:30. “Just tell them you changed your mind,” Barbara told me, “and you only want your TV hooked up.”
So when Jim called, a few minutes before 2, that’s what I did. "So you just want me to come and hook up your TV today?” Affirmative, Einstein.

======
I called Grandma right after speaking to Comcast—she was going to come up Monday and stay with me until they got here, but she wasn’t happy about the 1-5 time slot—I’m sure had the guy come Monday and not today she would have been complaining up a storm. Anyway, I called and she asked if I wanted her to come up, and I was thinking ‘if it’s OK with you,’ ‘cause she doesn’t like coming up more than once a week. And we’d already eaten lunch by the time Jim called to say he was on his way.
Before calling Grandma, I called Mom’s cell and left a message, saying I‘d explain later but Comcast was coming this afternoon. She called back while I was washing dishes—she must have thought it important, as she was still at the office. But after explaining Grandma was on her way, she was relieved: “You don’t need me after all!” |

When Jim called, I thought he said his name was Jeff—so it’s a good thing I asked again what his name was. He hooked up the Cable—the line runs behind the couch—and advised me on the remotes. So the black one, which came with the TV, is to power it on, and the Exfinity one, which is silver, that came with the service, is used for everything else. If I use the power on/off on the silver one, I risk turning off the Cable box while the TV’s on, or vise versa—and “nothing good can come from that,” as Mom would say.

SAYS A LOT

Sue was up to see the TV, remarking how good it looked. Then, after learning it was Jerry who mounted it on the wall: “Really? Well, it didn’t fall yet.” Says a lot about the competence of our maintenance guys.

WOODEN BLOCKS
======
Mom came to put blocks behind the couch so I don’t slam it into the wall and disturb the “Cable line. Jim told me that if that happens, some channels may not come in right—if at all.

10/7 - COOL
======
“Yes,” I exclaimed as I jumped off the couch and went over to the desk.
I started watching Investigation Discovery when Mom changed from Comcast to Direct, and when I moved out I missed it just as much as, if not more than, Disney Channel.
Even more exciting than finding I have one of the channels I used to watch is that NFB-Newsline, the telephone line set up by the National Federation of the Blind to allow people who can’t read newspapers to listen to them over the phone, has TV listings. They have all the major outlets, with two or three lists for Comcast. The second one is the closest to what I have (there may be some channels Newsline has that I don’t, but otherwise the numbers and everything are an exact match.

“I’m going to be out of town tomorrow,” Mom told me. “I’m going with a friend to King of Prussia.”
It’s not nice, but when Mom told me that I thought ‘good, more time I can watch TV.’
