MINOR PROJECT
======
This wasn’t a film, exactly, but a made-for-TV movie (on Lifetime Movie Network). Note that this was written before I moved out of Mom’s, and therefore prior to Internet access of my own.

‘Sybil,’ based on a book, is about a woman who was abused in various ways by her mother as a child, resulting in her developing sixteen distinct personalities—which was seen as exaggeration, at least by all but her therapist.

At the beginning of the film, Sybil is diagnosed with hysteria. She dissociates frequently, “blacking out” for days at a time—and doesn’t remember a thing that happened during that time. She also has vivid flashbacks of being sexually abusd by her mother.

While hysteria was a diagnosis decades ago, I am not aware that it still is. Instead, Sybil’s condition would be diagnosed as Dissociative Identity Disorder. The diagnosis, whose criteria symptom is the presense of at least two distinct personalities, used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder.
Sybil goes to therapy sessions that help her confront her past and lead a “normal” life. Through this Psychodynamic approach, Sybil comes to understand her blackouts for what they are—an attempt to cope with her traumatic past. In time, she is able to connect with her other personalities and become whole.

This film shows the profound impact child sexual abuse has [can have] on a person’s day-to-day functioning for years—maybe even over the course of a lifetime. It also shows how experiences such as “blackouts,{“ or dissociating from reality, can be very distressing to individuals like Sybil. [Note that such a symptom is very likely a defense mechanism.] I found this film disturbing, but very insightful as well.
(Note that any text in brackets are my additions to the original [I don’t especially care for the write-up, but didn’t wish to alter any part of it as that would retract from the assignment.]

STILL GOOD
======
It’s still good, the knowledge I learned two years ago in psyc class hasn’t left me. In point of fact, my favorite of the three psychology courses I took—Intro, Child Development, and Abnormal—was the last one, which I took in the fall of 2009. Least favorite? Child Development, probably because I broke my leg getting up to leave that class.
