THE PROBLEM
======
The problem was, the hand weights were in the bedroom Sunday, so if I wanted to use them I had to go in there. Plus, Grandma was coming the next day and I wanted to see if there were any magazines I could get rid of before she got here. ‘A consequence is missing dialogue vital to understanding of the movie.’
-------
But, the upside is, I got what I wanted to get done.

THE STORY THAT NOBODY WOULD READ: OR, WHAT I MISSED
======
It would make a good story title, though hardly anyone would read it: “what I missed while I took a nap.” Specifically, what movies I missed as a result of said nap. ‘I shouldn’t have stayed up to see that movie last night, but it sounded so good.’ Actually, I only missed three quarters of “Unthinkable,” so when “Rivals” came on I was able to hear that. ‘I don’t know what happened, but I later lost interest and turned it off.—perhaps that’s one that can’t just be “in the background.”’

How many actually can be?

11/24 - THANKSGIVING
========
Had I known, I’d have held on to the key. But I assumed Mom would be picking me up, as she always does. ‘Grandma had four 12-packs of Coke for me, but I didn’t think she’d stop here first to drop them off.’ She had to go back to the apartment to lock up after dropping me at Mom’s then.
------
I can see this happening in my mind's eye.

‘Mom opened the door and, in a mock serious voice, told Grandma she should have left me at home.’

I can hear it, too.

Dinner was around 1, and the guests consisted of Michael and Michelle, whose friends and co-workers call Shelley. “No one calls me Michelle.” ‘She has to be the center of attention;… Grandma didn’t talk to her except when she had to, and left much sooner than she normally does on a holiday.’
------
Surprisingly well-behaved.

After Grandma left, Edward and his friend Lainkan stopped over, and we had a really good time—in spite of the things that flew out of Shelley’s mouth. ‘More than once, the f-bomb flew out, and at one point she told Edward, “it’s your hair, for Christ’s sake!”’
-------
Sorry if I offend anyone---for the record, I wouldn't normally write like that... or talk like that... just telling it how it is.
As far as I know, the relationship between Michael and Michelle petered out--and "good riddence," I say. [I normally don't use that phrase, but with her it just comes naturally. I don't mean to be cruel, but some of the stuff I've heard... and sitting in that room with her put my teeth on edge. "Did somebody say 'me, me, me--it's all about me, me, me"?'

NO INFECTION
=======
‘There will be no infection.’ Although I think I was worried about something on Tuesday when I rubbed my left wrist raw, I’m not sure why. ‘Maybe I was afraid Dr. Smith would address something, and when he didn’t that went away. Or maybe I was concerned my ears would be so sore they’d require medication—like the other times. And, once I started rubbing I couldn’t stop. By then I was stressing because I knew I had to stop, but couldn’t seem to. And maybe Michael was right when he suggested the reason I wore that particular shirt was so I could cover up my wrist. And maybe I wanted her to see today.’ Whatever the reasoning, Mom didn’t notice until this afternoon, and she had a fit.
------
It gets worse with stress, you know?

After lecturing me on infection, she slapped a Band-Aid on my wrist, telling me, “you shouldn’t have expected any less; I’m a health care worker after all!”

I didn't.

I ACCIDENTALLY INTERRUPTED MY THANKSGIVING STORY, SO...
======
The young man said how he often feels unloved and like people don’t understand him. ‘His father’s trying to change his son into what he wants him to be, and there’s no way Edward can be open with Edy due to his fanatical views on things. ‘One of said opinions is that his children should move out as soon as they turn eighteen; seeing as Edward’s birthday is in August, he’ll still have his senior year of high school ahead of him—and I’ve been told, by more than one person, as long as he’s in high school it would be illegal to kick him out; that’s the reason Robbie dropped out of school, so he wouldn’t have to listen to his dad anymore.’

Later, when we talked to say good night, Mom said she hoped I wasn’t upset with her. “I didn’t tell you because I felt it was Edward’s story to tell.” I assured her I wasn’t mad: “There were certain indicators…” ‘Not mad, just left with a lot to think about.’

Oh, and the highlight of the day was when Mom took out the turkey and asked Michael to carve it. He took one look and said, “I’ve never seen a turkey with a dark ]behind] before… it’s upside-down!” Mom kept insisting she hadn’t known because “it was in the bag!”

JEALOUS
=======
Before Edward came, Elysha called and got mad at Mom for two reasons. First, “you invited Edward, but not me.” Second, the sixteen-year-old wanted Mom to pick her up. As to the first, the boy invited himself, and we’d have gladly visited with Elysha had she walked over. ‘Mom couldn’t have left, and it was unrealistic to think she could have.’ And there’s the teensy fact that she was mad at Edward. “So, you want to come over here and argue,” Mom asked her. Even so, we waited a few hours before Mom said, “if she’s not here by now she’s not coming.”

I think I just realized where I got my inspiration for my fraternal twins. [Sahriyah and Cheveyo]

FUNNY STORY

At least, now they are—though they certainly weren’t funny at the time. ‘The holidays are a time for telling all manner of hilarious and/or humiliating stories.’

First, there was the time I was nine and locked Mom out of the apartment (this was after we’d left Mike and Mom had gotten a place of her own). There was an outer door, which used a key, and a screen door, which did not. For some unfathomable reason, I had to touch everything. “Ooh, I wonder what this does!” This was back when Mom had to take me to work with her as the SACC program ended at a certain time. And Mom would wear dresses and skirts to her job.

So, here she is, this straight dress on, and she goes to the neighbor’s to ask if he had a ladder. “I do,” he replied, laughing, “but what do you want it for?” And so he used the ladder to climb up to the window and “break in” to our apartment so he could let us in. After that, Mom used to joke that she met Tony when he broke in to our apartment (this was when we lived in Cleona). Ironically, Tony’s wife was also named Toni.

Next, there was the time I was “playing a game” and locked myself in the closet. It was the kind of door that just
Has the knob on one side, and a little pointy thing on the other, so you really can’t open it from the inside. I was fourteen, and Mom had just started leaving me home alone. It started withshort trips, like to the store, and gradually worked up to her going to work. I had access to either a portable phone or a landline, so Mom was comfortable with this arrangement. But on that day, she called and called, and I didn’t answer, so she ended up leaving the office early.

There was the time when Tiffany was over, and I reached up for something, and pulled down three glass mixing bowls on my head. [Cleona again]

Funnily enough, I was perfectly fine, even with glass falling all around me. [Just call me rockhead.]

And the time I pulled the metal cash box down from the top shelf of my closet, breaking my teeth. [That was after Mom and I were living with Edy and his children] I was in that dentist’s chair so many times, Dr. Silverman would ask me “kissed any walls lately?”

Then there was the time I stumbled in the bathroom and stuck my hand through the window. Mom came flying downstairs like she was running from a fire, while Edy didn’t react at all except to ask, “is she OK?”

Tiffany was there for that one, too.
