First of all, what's up with the phrase "rules are rules"? It's either said by those who are too strict with their "enforcement of said "rules," or they're too lax.

Second I'd like to thank everyone reading this--and assure you, yet again, that my previous blogs having been deleted are completely and categorically my fault. **You did nothing *wrong.

Which brings me to another rant: why is it some people (nobody on here, I'm sure) can't accept responsibility for*anything. "If blame is to be going around... just don't look at me."

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

12/14 - QUESTIONS
=======
What do you do when someone you love has a drinking problem, but adamantly denies having one? What do you do if this same loved one distances himself from those who care about him? What do you do when everything you say is wrong in this person’s view?

All these questions occurred to me as Grandma filled me in on the latest with Michael. She doesn’t want me to worry, aned I assure her I’’m not. Whatever concerns I have, that’s all they are. She’s the one who’s worried, and clearly needs to talk about it.

I SURVIVED
=======
There are days when “I Survived” is more interesting than others. Like today: One of the stories was about an elementary school principal who did her utmost to protect her students from a gunman. The man’s weapon of choice was a machete. The question that immediately sprang to mind was, “what is his problem?”The worst part was he was chasing after five- and six-year-old children.

-------
AT THIS LATER POINT, AN INSTANT CONNECTION IS MADE TO ANOTHER INCIDENT, THIS ONE *NOT* JUST LEARNED ON TV, BECAUSE IT WAS FAR TOO RECENT FOR THAT.
ASSOCIATIONS ARE FUNNY THINGS :(

12/15 - NO SURP RISE
=======
First, I forgot to order groceries this week. So it came as no surprise to me when I was told to “call Ginny on Monday.”

------
NO GROCERIES THIS WEEK, EITHER, THOUGH IT'S BY DESIGN: I SPENT FAR TOO MUCH LAST WEEK.

Second, I really wasn’t surprised when the “X Factor” finalists were announced. I was glad, because the one I wanted got in—and wasn’t surprised at all about who got sent home.

CELEBRATING
========
- Mom – Sorry I called so late, but it’s all your uncle’s fault.
- Me – Sure—blame somebody else, **anybody *else!
- Mom – Your uncle has some news for you.

It’s always interesting when Mom and Michael are in the same room.

- Michael – Your mom’s psychotic.
- Me - **I knew *that!

Although it’s all in fun, I later wondered why I blurted that out.

- Michael – No, actually, I just bought a new car, and we were out celebrating.
- Me – Good for you!

So now he has something to drive other than the dump truck! (The latest with Grandma is that the other day Michael ordered this car, but didn’t know when he’d be able to pick it up from the lot. Grandma was hurt because he didn’t ask her to take him.)

12/16 - THE BLACK WIDOW

The program aired on the biography channel.

It told the story of Sandra, who told Alan she was pregnant with twins when she couldn’t have children. Later, she’d tell anyone that would listen that he was a drug addict and abusive. As if that weren’t enough, she hired an investigator for protection from her ex-husband’s killer.

She and Alan later separate,, then suspiciously, requested he take out life insurance on himself.
Sandra claimed her two former husbands died of natural causes—and there were those who disagreed—but it wasn’t until her friend was murdered that rumors of “the black widow” began flying around. ‘”How many women have that much death following them?”’

WHAT THE... [SOME THINGS MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE]
============================
“Who sends something like that in a Christmas card,” I blurted when Grandma told me about her sister’s card. Inside were two items: a recipe for sugar cookies, and a picture of a tombstone. (Is that the same tombstone Janice swore up and down there was no money for?)

Two years ago when Jean died of an undiagnosed infection (there’s a lot of disagreement over what it was), Janice was, to put it nicely, inappropriate. (She wanted to take charge of everything—but she doesn’t live nearby and didn’t want to come down to help Grandma with the arrangements.)

At the funeral home, she told the pastor and everyone present, “I just want everyone to know, I gave Jean all her stickers and stamps.” Then her husband, Bill, had to make it worse by adding, “and she wrote her a letter every Sunday.”Later, at the cemetery, Janice claimed Grandma was “carrying on,” when the truth couldn’’t have been any different. (Grandma offered to, if she could, split the money for the tombstone, but she refused to fight over it. She didn’t hear one word about it until this photo popped up.)

THE REASON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It wouldn’t have mattered—but part of me had to know:
- Me – Why didn’t Ruth come with you when you came to visit?
- Mom – I don’t know…
So she handed the phone to her friend.
Ruth – My back was hurting and I wanted to put heat on it.
This prompted her to ask about *my back. I truly do feel bad for not telling Mom before this morning. I was afraid she was going to blow in here like a tornado. (I’m afraid I made it sound worse than it really is—but, then again, the mornings are pretty rough.)
THAT WAS GOOD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As “Miss Chartley’s Guided Tour” ended, I remarked aloud, “that was good.” Then, as an afterthought, I added, “or should I say, ‘that’s famous!”’

MOVIE
========
I didn’t know until a few days ago they made a movie of “The Dark Is Rising.” It aired on channel 2 at 4, and I didn’t answer the phone when Grandma called because I didn’t want to miss it. (I don’t normally watch a book before reading the movie, but the title jumped out at me the other day when checking the listings, and I was reminded of how Deb told me sometime back I’d like the series.) [I fully admit to being distracted part of the time, but if I ever get an opportunity to read the books, I won’t miss it.]

12/18 - THE VISIT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was on the sofa when Mom and Ruth got here. “All I need to do is sit down here next to you,” I murmured to Ethan as he chirped away happily. Then, after a pause, I added (sarcastically), “have I been neglecting you?”
The first thing Ruth did before sitting down in the padded chair by the window was to hand me a square box of dark chocolates (she had Mom ask me last night if I like that sort of thing, and I answered that I love dark chocolate). There are three different kinds: raspberry filled, chocolate filled, and mint filled.
