After visiting for a bit, Mom and Ruth left (after a heated argument over whether or not they were going to Sam’s Club—Mom needs to buy some stuff for a party at work, including cheesecake, and Ruth needs to go back home tonight.

12/19 - DELIVERY
=======
“Did I hear you right—that it’ll be here on Wednesday?” Here’s what I did: I absently hung up, without realizing what she’d just said. I panicked, but then I hit redial immediately—and explained that Wednesday was going to be very busy for me. [After all, why cause myself to rush around like a chicken with its head cut off if I don’t have to?] Outcome: the delivery’s taking place tomorrow.

12/20 - HALF-CASTE [SORT OFA MIXTURE OF WHAT I WAS READING AND MY STORIES]
=========
“I may have to stop reading soon,” I told Ethan. [Any kind of racially-charged language either offends me or, at least, upsets me.] The stuff that’s only upsetting mirrors some of the comments some of the Dark make in my stories—while the offensive stuff, I just can’t listen to.

The problem is, the book’s too good to put away—but the parallel to my stories [the unwritten ones in my head] is something I just can’t ignore. (Sitting there, something finally clicked into place: the reason half of the Voliyno family is hated is that the one member had the audacity to marry a “half breed.” Same thing as “half caste,” in my opinion, just different terminology.)

1/22 - X FACTOR
===========================
It was the first TV show I’d watched all week so far. THE COMPETITION STARTED OFF WITH THREE CONTESTANTS: MELANIE, CHRIS AND JOSH; BY THE TIME IT WAS OVER, IT WAS JUST DOWN TO MELANIE AND JOSH.

IDEA [FOR NEW STORY]
=======================
I’m actually surprised I didn’t have a nightmare about it. NOTE TO SELF: BE MORE CAREFUL WHAT I READ IN BED. It’s what I get for listening to more of “The Big Necessity.” ‘”I just had a really gross idea!”’ TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, IT WAS ALREADY THERE BEFORE THE BOOK.

- “Some creatures are best left in the wild.”
- Anita, 33, student of psychology and nature enthusiast
- “Anita shied away from company… [she] had a passion for reptiles which few people understood. Her entire world revolved around her pets.”
- “As a child growing up in Beverly Hills, Anita struggled to fit in.”
- “Almost everyone who developed an interest in reptiles did so at a very young age.”
- “Few people knew the full extent of the physical and psychological abuse Anita endured as a child.”
- “As she became more and more isolated from society, her trips to the desert became more and more frequent… Her innocent interest in reptiles became a terrible fascination for snakes.”
- “Anita saw her own tortured past in the mass execution of rattlesnakes… disillusioned b y what she saw as the cruelty of mankind, [she] turned her back on psychology.”

- “You’re dealing with something that is dangerous on a daily basis… people that are interested in keeping exotic, dangerous wildlife think they’re somehow different.”
- Ed is another snake enthusiast. “[His] first mistake was reaching his hand into the cage of a venomous snake [a cobra]. His second was not seeking help immediately… The neurotoxic venom flowing through Ed’s veins was slowly paralyzing his body.”
- “Despite his near-death experience, Ed continues to keep venomous snakes in his hojme… anyone who huandles snakes is going to get bit.”
- Rationale: “It’s hard to give something like that up. It’s a part of me.”

- “In her own way, [Anita] wanted to help other people like herself.”
- When Anita disappears (meaning she hasn’t been seen in days), the authorities “are called to investigate what they thought could be a homicide… There was a lot of blood on the floor.”
- “[Anita] was found clutching a note with the name of the hospital she should have gone to [were there time].”

According to the Philadelphia Zoo’s Web site, “The gaboon viper is found in the rainforests of central, west and east Africa.” They “have a unique pattern of colors that range from shades of brown to pinks and purples… They have broad heads and horns become present with age. They’re also known for their large fangs that can grow up to two inches in length.” It “has one of the fastest and most lethal strikes of any serpent.”

- “There are those who think they’re too skillful to be bitten… There are others that think they can become immune by injecting themselves with venom.”
- Brian owns “a collection of more than fifty of the world’s most venomous snakes… [there was a close call when his king cobra escaped, but he distracted the animal so he could catch it again, and any danger was averted. But] as his confidence grew, he began to take greater risks,” [including having his photo taken with the snake].
- “Brian assured his Mom that, even if the worst happened and he were bitten, he was prepared… Brian was gambling that the antivenom would buy him enough time.”

- Another man, Rex, “felt an affinity with a defenseless snake” from a young age, dealing with countless problems at home.In order to obtain the venom he feels will save his life (he injects it into himself to develop immunity), “he puts his life, and the life of his girlfriend, on the line.”
- Brian is bitten by his king cobra as he fight to save its life during the birthing process. “He did within thirty minutes…Unbeknownst to everyone, [his] death sentence came long before he was bitten.”
- “In the months leading to the fatal bite, strange things began to happen… [but ] ignored [the] symptoms.”
- “Brian may have known he had an allergy to snakes, but he didn’t do anythingt about it, possibly because he was afraid something would happen to his snakes… without the allergic response he should have been able to live for eight, nine, maybe ten hours.”

JOB OFFER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I can’t believe this could be happening to me.” This Grandma kept repeating over and over like a mantra. She’s accepted the job, and starts Monday. She doesn’t know what her hours are for the rest of the week, but Monday’s hours are 8-2. |
“They wanted me to go in tomorrow, but I said I had stuff to do for Christmas dinner.” They sound friendly and accommodating, and told Grandma to alert them to any problems. THEY’LL HELP HER WITH TRAINING, AND SHE CAN PRETTY MUCH CHOOSE HER OWN SCHEDULE UNTIL THE TAX SEASON WHEN THE POSITION BECOMES FULL TIME.
“He told me the job’s mine if I want it, and I thought, ‘is this for real?”’ While Grandma and I were talking on the phone she got an incoming call from a lawyer, offering her a job. “He said to come over and look at [the program] and tell him if I thought I couldn’t [handle it], but he thinks I can.” He said she was thought of right away. HE WAS ONE OF THE MANY EMPLOYERS GRANDMA TALKED TO WHEN SHE WAS ACTIVELY HUNTING FOR A JOB, AND SHE GAVE UP BECAUSE THE SEARCH WAS LOOKING SO FRUITLESS.
