First of all, what's up with the phrase "rules are rules"? It's either said by those who are too strict with their "enforcement of said "rules," or they're too lax.

Second I'd like to thank everyone reading this--and assure you, yet again, that my previous blogs having been deleted are completely and categorically my fault. **You did nothing *wrong.

Which brings me to another rant: why is it some people (nobody on here, I'm sure) can't accept responsibility for*anything. "If blame is to be going around... just don't look at me."

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

12/24 - TRASH
=======
“I didn’t realize how bad strawberries and bananas could smell,” I exclaimed as I finally replaced the trash bag with a clean one. “All this fruit really stinks when it’s too ripe!”

THE BOOK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~=====================================================================================================================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I believe I started wondering about it last night as I was listening to “An Impartial Witness.” A lot of the books I’m receiving are either read by the same few narrators, or they’re by the same authors [not, as I initially thought, necessarily the same subject matter].
There are a lot more mysteries and romances than other kinds of books [fantasy and science fiction are prevalent too, which gives for more fiction than nonfiction]. I did get a few nonfiction books about science or music, and a few memoirs, but I’m very selective about which of those I actually read—so most of those end up in the “return quickly” pile.
Just out of curiosity, I logged on to FunTrivia to see which books I’d listed on the team message board [I had a few Braille titles, too, but was mostly interested in the digital books]. There are, of course, titles that weren’t included because I read them back when I was leading Universal Protectors, the team that flopped.
Of those listed, the ones I enjoyed the most were [note that “Impartial Witness” does not, in any way, make the list]:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~======================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~==========================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- “The Ghost King” by R.A. Salvatore [I must have listened to this one five times—the narrator was that good]
- “Comfort and Joy” by Fern Michaels and others [a collection of stories, my favorite of which was the first one]
- “Orchard Valley Grooms” by by Debbie Macomber [features Valerie and Stephanie and was a special presentation—I forget what they called it]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~========================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~=====================================================================================================================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- “Snow Angels” by Fern Michaels and others [my favorites were the first two—and, again, the narrator did a fantastic job]
- ‘”The Man You’ll Marry,’ and ‘The First Man You’ll Meet”’ by Debbie Maccomber [some really funny scenes]
- “The Spirit Lens” by Carol Berg [I relistened to this until the player said something was wrong with the cartridge]
- “Song of the Dragon” by Tracy Hickman [great narrator—I reread it until I grew sick of it due to overuse]
- “Warbreaker” by Brandon Sanderson [This one had some really marvelous quotes]
- “Happiness Key” by Emilie Richards [seems like it’s a series—funny the book didn’t convey that]
- “The Tenderness of Wolves” by Stef Penney [only read this once, but the narrator did well with it]
- “Imager’s Challenge” by L. E. Modesitt [a book two, but the narrator was stellar, and so this ranked with my absolute favorites]
===============================================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~==================================================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- “The Complete Chronicles of Conan by Robert E. Howard [coincidentally, he shared my birthday—and Mark Dolgato did a good job]
- “Shadow of Power by Steve Martini [little did I know I was reading a book nine—but it was very good]
- “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert. [like a lot of historical fiction, I could only read this once because of all the emotion it evoked]
- ‘”Libby’s London Merchant’ and ‘Miss Chartley’s Guided Tour”’ by Carla Kelly [the second was my favorite
Other books I remember enjoying that weren’t on the list:
- “Justice Hall” by Laurie R. King [the plight of the young soldiers had me in tears, and again the narrator did an excellent job]
- “Foundation” by Mercedes Lackey [the first in the “Collegium Chronicles” set; the narrator did it justice]
=============================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~=========================================================================~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- “The Fire Kimono” by Laura Joh Rowland [I even wrote a quiz on it—something that’s very hard to do off a recording]
- “Cursed” by Carol Higgins Clark [this one makes the list because of how the author did with it]
- “New York” by Edward Rutherfurd [even though I didn’t read the last few stories, this was delightfully done]
- “A Blue and Gray Christmas by Joan Medlicott [until I got this, I didn’t generally read books in such series as the “ladies of Covington”]
I realize that some of these books made it on the list solely due to the narrator—and others were well-written and well done. [Those that are well-written but poorly read are on my “cannot stand” list, which is where I put “Impartial Witness.”]
DINNER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last night, Mom and I decided we were going to do “dinner and a movie.” To my offer to treat, Mom politely declined, saying that she’d “whip up something.”

As she wasn’t feeling well today, she slept through the morning and a few hours into the afternoon. Having baking to do for tomorrow, she qasked if I’d take care of dinner. So, after calling to make sure Marco’s was open, I ordered a fried chicken salad for Mom and a chicken tenderloin sub for myself. I also ordered a side of corn nuggets, which I ate as soon as they came, figuring they wouldn’t reheat so well.

I kept the food in the refrigerator until around 7. After eating, Mom lay down on the couch for a bit, then helped write out Christmas cards. After going downstairs to “distribute” the cards, we watched the DVD of “Christmas Vacation.” [‘He put a lot of hard work into it.’ ‘So do washing machines.’

TIFFANY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I forgot to call Mom to say good morning. Instead, I began working on her tape, resolved to finish it before too long, when I was interrupted by my cell phone. Thinking it was Mom, I chuckled, and said hello—only to discover it was Tiffany. “What are you doing Monday? Will you be at home, or spending the day with your mother?” Having no other plans, I told her I’d be here, and was both surprised and pleased when she said she’d been thinking of coming down because she has off Monday and is going down to her chiropractor.
CHRISTMAS DAY 2011
DRAT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Drat.” First, my plastic headband broke. Then I knocked Mom’s tape off the desk and cracked the case. Oh, and did I mention I fell—either because I’m unused to walking in my shoes, or because of stress, or both?
DINNER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner was turkey, ham, stuffing, filling, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, rolls, cheesecake, pumpkin bread… and who knows what else. As to the people, apart from Mom and myself it was Rob, Robbie, Corissa (Robbie’s girlfriend), Gloria (Corissa’s 1-1/2-year-old daughter), Michael, Crystal and her 2-1/2-year-old son.

When I gave Grandma her gift, she exclaimed, “you weren’t supposed to get me anything!” “I didn’t *get it,” I told her, I *made it!” As for the card, Mom was helping me prepare a bunch of others—so why not one more?

Charlie and Anita came over later, and we laughed and told stories. Grandma related the time she and I went to Walmart, then to Wendies. “This was one of the weekends she was coming down to sleep over.” [IN CASE I'VE BEEN VAGUE, ONE OF THE WEEKENDS I WAS SLEEPING AT HER PLACE, BEFORE THE CIGARETTE SMELL BECAME INTOLERABLE TO ME.]
