To be fair, Mom did finally say, “we’ll play it by ear.” Mmy heart goes out to her for being so understanding, and that makes me even sorrier I feel the way I do. (Is the Universe determined to make things difficult for me?) As I explained to Mom: “I really do want to go—I just don’t want to be over there if I don’t feel well.” ‘An unfortunate fact is that my balance is worse when I don’t feel good.’
--------------------------------------------------------
TRUE IT MAY BE, BUT DON'T USE THE BALANCE AS AN EXCUSE!

QUESTIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did do some more research for the game—and my lack of success probably added to my anxiety. ‘The most I found were more questions that I had fun answering.’
- “In which country is Auschwitz” [that’s so easy…]
Poland [I used to wonder why European history was so much more interesting to me than US history]
- “Who was Leonardo di Caprio’s co-star in Titanic?” [another easy one]
Kate Winslett [from someone who’s never seen the movie, that’s saying something]
- “Acid rain is composed mostly of the oxides of two oxides. Give either.”
Sulfur or nitrogen [maybe due to how miserable I was, or how preoccupied I was, I blanked on this one]
- “What word do we use to describe the sexual reproduction of a genetic carbon copy of an animal or plant.”
Clone
- “What is the state capital of Alaska?”
Juneau
- “How many pins are there in a ten pin bowling ball.”
Three [why was I surprised to know I knew this one?]
Upon hearing those words, I put the phone next to me so I wouldn’t have to scramble for it when Mom called again. ‘She was running some errands first.’
She brought the mail with her, consisting of three big envelopes, which I was sure I could identify without opening them. She also brought a few salads and some soup, along with some medicine to alleviate my symptoms. In addition, she swept the floor and fed the bird—finally leaving to run some m0ore errands and do some cooking.
BLAME [THIS IS VAGUE]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’ll blame it on the bird,” I exclaimed, laughing. I had been listening to “Miss Chartley’s Guided To ur” for the second time while I rested, when I decided to call Mom.

“I was just about to call you.” Then she added—and I felt a sinking sensation—“it’ll soon be time for you to make a decision.”
“I hate to say this, but I don’t think I can make it.”
“I understand. I remember how I felt a week and a half ago.” I told her I feel better than I did, but not well enough to mingle with company—and certainly not well enough to stay up until midnight. [What am I blaming on Ethan—the fact I was laughing at all?]

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No, Audrey—please don’t,” I said as I stood in the doorway of the living room. My head was pounding, and—unless it was my imagination—I smelled smoke. ‘Bad enough when I feel perfectly fine, but… no wonder I feel sick!’
ETHAN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s as if the bird knew I didn’t feel well. For the most part, he chirped all day, and then when I finally watched some TV and stuck my finger in the cage, he came over and rubbed his head against it. Then I removed it as I was feeling tired. “Are you mad at me,” I asked later when I put it back in—to which he responded by rubbing his head against my finger again. ‘If there’s anything more annoying than a head cold, I can’t think of it at the moment, as I was forced to remove my hand again to go rest.’

HANG UP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Did you just hang up on me?” Not deliberately, I didn’t. “Don’t you hang up on me!” Half teasing, half not.
I had just called to say “hi,” and the New Year’s Party was under way—so I got to say “hello” to Uncle Michael, Cathy [Mom’s friend from work], Lainkan, Edward [who’s played so many tricks in the past that, when Cathy answered, my foggy brain thought he was again], Elysha, and Grandma. Cathy told me, “I was looking forward to meeting yoy, but then your Mom told me you were sick.” Another twinge of guilt at that—why did I have to be sick?] Hopefully, Cathy and I will meet each other soon.
Both Lainkan and Elysha wished me a speedy recovery—and Elysha remarked on how I never call her. ‘She doesn’t call me, either—and I don’t have her number, though she has mind—and, apparently, keeps losing it.
Grandma played a guess-who game when she came on. “I don’t need to guess who this is,” I exclaimed—and she just laughed. “That Edward hasn’t stopped talking sicnce he got here.” “That doesn’t surprise me.”
CRISIS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Elysha called me in a panic because she didn’t know what to wear. I didn’t realize that was a major life crisis.” And I couldn’t help replying, “if that’s the only thing she has to worry about, she’s doing pretty well.” ‘I wish that were my greatest complaint.’

GREAT WITH KIDS

“I must have missed it,” I told Mom, “but you’re great with kids.”
“Maybe that’s because I am one.”
“Oh, is that it? That makes sense!”

At one point, Noah sat in Charlie’s seat—sort of as if to say, “what are you going to do now?” [I couldn’t even remember Crystal’s name so I told Mom, “Say hello to what’s-her-name for me.” “I will.”]

AND THAT'S THE END OF THAT YEAR (PHOOEY. I SAY PHOOEY!) [LITERARY REFERENCE, THAT--TO RICHARD MATHIESON'S "OTHER KINGDOMS"] Interesting how all the books that touch me wind up in my vocabulary and writing.

Another weird dream this morning
Jarred awake by angry voice on the other side of my door shouting my name
Just lay there while my heart calmed down
Indication that something, could be anything, is bothering me
In other news, Mom's working till 10:30 tonight
"They work you too hard."
"I*I* work me... I'm my own boss, remember?"
"You work you too hard."
"Don't I know it."
