But, let me not get sidetracked. “Land of the… what?” basically sums up my thinking regarding this story, and others: The justice system needs work, immigration needs work… I could go on and on, but I fear I’d lose my audience that way.
------
Such concepts were *stilol* a stretdch for me to even *think* of a year ago (that must have been earlier in the year, because I seem to have noticed a shift in my thought process again).

I need to try to find that book, for it's where I got "crock of applesauce" from
I think it was called "smart Aleck's guide" or something
======
It all started the morning of May 7th—or, more specifically, the night before, when Mom had invited me to join her and a friend at the mall. “There’s going to be a Lebanon Idol at 4:00, and Stephanie and I are going to listen.” And, for the record, in spite of the fact that my left arm still hurts like a bugger, I had every intention of going—until, that is, I could barely sleep. And then, Mom gets mad at me, as if I’m *always making excuses to avoid going out of the apartment. But I swear I’d have gone if I had felt better—I just wasn’t willing to subject Mom or Stephanie to any complaining, and I knew I wouldn’t enjoy the music. So much for being a good daughter!

Anyway, that night I took an allergy pill—or, as I like to call it, my “drowsy pill”—and woke up feeling like I’d been drinking heavily the night before. And let’s not forget sleeping for *twelve hours straight—close to thirteen if you want to get technical about it!
And then Mom asks me if I’d like to go down to Grandma’s for dinner. And I thought, **I’d like to… but I’m moving *slow. And then, **If I don’t, I’ll miss the opportunity to spend time with my mother on Mother’s *Day. And let’s not forget that I *always go to visit Grandma on Mother’s Day. So I said, “I should have some energy by then.”

Speed up to later. It didn’t actually occur to me **until we were in the *car that I forgot to get Mom’s card out of my desk drawer. But it was a beautiful day, and I couldn’t do anything about it right then, so I pushed it to the back of my mind.

And so wen the 45-minute trip ended, and we were at Grandma’s. And we decided to order from Tony’s. “Let’s all get different sides,” Uncle Michael suggested, and we’ll share.” So I got curly fries, Grandma got corn nuggets, Michael got breaded cauliflower, and Mom got Buffalo wings (which weren’t very spicy, if at all, and were quite a disappointment. And for a sandwich, I had a cheese steak, Mom and Grandma got California chicken cheese steaks or just regular California cheese steaks, and I forget what Michael had. And for dessert, there were three flavors of ice cream: Bunny Tracks, some sort of Ribbon stuff, and Macadamia Nut Cookie. Mom had some of the Bunny Tracks, and both Michael and I had the Macadamia Nut. I’m not sure about Grandma.

Then, Mom’s working on these puzzles. She had wanted me to help her with the one, turning gray to gold, but I couldn’t come up with anything. “You had a week, but you didn’t even work on it,” she mock scolded. My response: that’s a crock of applesauce.

It turns out Michael’s pretty good at those, though he’s still working on one and having a lot of trouble with it. Mom says he can keep it and she’ll track it down later in the week. She probably wouldn’t be so serious about them, but there are prizes involved, including a brand-new bike, “like the one Lance Armstrong uses”.

Then, when we got back to the apartment, I gave Mom her card. But in between, I had a conversation with my “charming” neighbors, Charlaigne and Robert (well, an exchange, and pleasant enough).
See, here’s how it started. The elevator stopped on their floor, he says it’s cold outside, his wife says it isn’t, and I burst out laughing (or was it Mom who said it wasn’t—oh, yeah, *Mom said it was the warmest day so far this year!) And Charlaigne comments how I “got a kick out of that one”. So, like I said, pleasant enough. (So, the viper has a nice side, does she? [Oh, yeah, not nice—but how nice is one supposed to be after that episode where she was pounding on my door near one in the morning? {Now ain’t that a crock of applesauce?}])

I should have read the "note," then I'd have known *exactly* how it originated!
======
Note: “Applesauce” is a word I came across in ‘The Smart Aleck’s Guide to American History’ that means “nonsense.” The context in which I use it, though, it means much more than that—much as Uncle Michael’s “outstanding” doesn’t mean “outstanding.”

The other week, I read a back issue of ‘Ladies’ Home Journal’ about a young woman named Isatu. Since I threw away the magazine when I was done with it, I forget her last name, but for the purposes of this story it doesn’t really matter.

I’ve always been fascinated with the origin and meaning behind different names. For example, while researching girl and boy names for one of my quizzes, I learned the name Anastasia is of Greek origin and means “resurrection”. |

Other snippets of information I learned at the time include:
- The name Taiwo is African for “eldest of twins”.
- The meaning of my name is “Supplanter,” and can be traced back to either Jewish or English roots.
Out of curiosity, I put in a search today and learned—from meaning-of-names.com:
” The name Jaymee originated as an Scottish name. The name Jaymee is most often
used as a girl name or female name.””
From babynology.com, I learned of a famous person with my name: “Jaymee Joaqui” of the Philippines.
From babynamecollection, I found other names and meanings that start with J, for example:
“Jay, Latin for “a bird in the crow family”;
“Jaya, Hindu for “name of God or victory”;
“Jayanti, Indian for “victory”; and
“Jason, Greek for “a healing”

So what does the name Isatu mean? As All The Baby Names’ Site explains, “Historical meaning unknown.” But there is other information: “People with the name Isatu have a deep inner desire for order and physical creativity, and want to be involved in conventional, safe activities.. People with the name Isatu are excellent at analyzing, understanding, and learning. They tend to be mystics, philosophers, scholars, and teachers.
Because they live so much in the mind, they tend to be quiet and introspective, and are usually introverts. When presented with issues, they will see the
larger picture. Their solitary thoughtfulness and analysis of people and world events may make them seem aloof, and sometimes even melancholy.”

“Marco’s, pick-up or delivery?” Reading the list I’d made up, I ordered what I wanted and ended the call. “$32,” I muttered, fishing out $35. I then sat down at the computer to wait.

“It’s not here!” I grumbled, carefully scanning the bags for the second time. “Cold sub… another cold sub… salad… and drinks.” With the blood roaring in my ears, I picked up the phone and hit redial.

“I told them no mayo and no lettuce, onion or tomato,” I thought as I munched happily on the chicken tenderloin sub. Granted, there wasn’t tomato—and I wasn’t sure about the onion—but there certainly was mayonnaise. And I’d stopped ordering that on sandwiches some time ago, when I realized they became soggy when refrigerated. “Ah, well,” I muttered, placing half of it in the fridge, “I’ll eat that tomorrow.”

I rarely do it anyway because it's hard to get up
======
I detest mopping the floor on my hands and knees. Can’t be avoided when I spill something, but…
The worst part’s the hair. Well, now it’s the amount of food stuck on the linoleum, but when I’m really stressed it’s still the hair. That’s on account of this horrible tendency I have to, when I’m stressed, pull my hair out. And also this bad habit I’ve gotten into of not throwing away the hair that gets stuck in thedrain of the bathtub. Instead, I throw it on the floor—and, one way or another, end up tracking the stuff across the apartment. So, unless Mom comes and cleans it all up…
