Well, there is one other nurse I remember, but she’s from rehab. Her name was Irene, and I had her when I was on the rehab side. So a few times when I was on the other side, she came over briefly to talk to me. (Now that I come to think of it, there is someone else: Julie, who used to babysit me when I was younger and who was always talking about mellow yellow or something to make me laugh [oh, yeah, and there were Janice and Barb {at first I thought Janice was mean, but revised that opinion as I got to know her, and Barb was one of the nurses that helped me in the main hospital as well as a few times at the Caplan}]).

Oh, I almost forgot: one day, I met the NHA (Nursing Home Administrator [like what Mom is {though she works at a retirement home}]), Karen (yes, the Caplan’s a licensed nursing facility, even if insurances *do demand that patients are in and out of there quickly). And there was my doctor, Dr. Hartman (whom I’ve been told now and again is easy on the eye [my roommates all had Dr. Schaefer, who is in his 70s and is the Medical Director {that’s how Mom knows him; I met him once or twice, and he’s very nice}]).

And unlike 2007, I wasn’t transferred anywhere after the Caplan—that’s one thing I’ll never understand: a patient’s beginning to recover, and the health insurance decides that any improvements aren’t enough, so he/she needs to be moved to a long-term care place [that’s what happened in 2007: |

After I had the surgery on my leg {they put a metal rod and pins in to hold the bone in place so it would knit back together}, I was in so much pain I could barely move my right leg. And so, after about two weeks in Rehab, I was moved to Manor Care {I liked a nurse there named Tara, who was my age, until my “Grandpa” was sent there and wound up with MRSA in his leg; I also remember someone named Olivia and a few from the kitchen whose names I never knew, but…} |

But this time, Mom and I and the therapy staff were able to convince them to let me stay a little longer {this was at the week-and-a-half point; turns out, in the end, I was there almost a month—whereas in 2007, the combined time spent in the hospital, Caplan and Manor Care was two months}]).

And there was another difference: when I returned home, I had no steps like I did when I still lived with Mom.

Let's not forget something else about rehab: every time the maintenance guys would go into my room, or one of the kitchen staff, I had to endure teasing about how cute they were, and I should get to know them, etc.

Zied’s one of those really nice guys, doesn’t through his education around, who’s suffered so much in his life it’s hard to believe. First, he gets in a car accident—I think it was October 29, though I can’t be sure, and forget the year. But after that, he’s paralyzed from the waist down.

Really sad about the children
=====
His wife, Kara (a cousin, though how distant I can’t say—I’ve never been good at determining these things—had been caring for him for awhile. Then, she left him at a nursing home: don’t ask me why; maybe she couldn’t provide the level of care he needed, or maybe her reasons were selfish… but the home wasn’t the best place for him, and he wasn’t receiving the care he needed (I seem to remember he had been getting therapy, then at some point it was stopped, and he couldn’t move his arms anymore, either).

To make a long story short, a nurse made some promises to him, saying she’d take care of him if he moved into her place. And she was being paid $3000 a month to provide said care. But as soon as she took him to live with her, the level of care she provided diminished—then stopped altogether. To make matters worse, she took Zied’s cell phone, so she couldn’t call anyone, including his son Alex (who was quite upset, not being able to get ahold of his dad [and I don’t blame him])

By some miracle, or twist of fate, or however you want to think about it, the nurse left her cell behind, and Zied was able to call the authorities. So they broke into the place in order to get him—and rushed Zied to a hospital. |

And he required immediate surgery (Grandma wasn’t sure what all was wrong with him, but she said he *did have bed sores [“It just makes me sick,” she kept repeating over and over {The police said it’s one of the worst cases of abuse they’ve seen}])

So, right now, Zied’s in a hospital in Lancaster. Just where he’ll end up from there is uncertain, but I--for one--hope things get significantly better for him.

Zied’s 38 years old, and in spite of all the hardships he’s endured over the past few years, he’s still upbeat and optimistic. He enjoys going into the community and looks forward toreturning to school at some point. It’s amazing he’s so positive, all things considered. I mean, no one would blame him if he sat around feeling sorry for himself.

I hear Lancaster Geneeral Hospital has about sixty applications out to nursing homes as far away as Williamsport. So, right now, all we can do is wait and see what happens. Because, wherever he goes, not only do his physical needs have to be considered, but the social aspect and everything else.

Michael got pulled over for a DUI last night :(
They impounded his truck, and he had to pay $260-some to get it back (Grandma took him to get it, and I got to listen to her complain incessantly: "I don't know why they impounded his truck;" I think I could have made a *song* from it)
As a result of Grandma not getting much sleep, she called to cancel
Michael had "The Crazy B" pick him up and drop him home
His blood alcohol was twice the legal limit
Apparently, when he got home, he started "spouting off his mouth" about how "now everyone's going to be happy" because "they kept saying this would happen" (I didn't realize someone could make an even bigger idiot of themselves than they already had by driving while drunk [while it is true that "everyone" kept advising him against doing that because he was bound to get caught at some point, I highly doubt anyone's doing flips or clapping their hands because the day's finally come)
Watched the finale of "Revenge" last night, but missed a few seconds because I wanted to know who won "Idol" (mostly, I just watched because then I'd have something to talk to Grandma about; I didn't vote this week because I found I didn't care one way or the other)
I found the "Adventures in Odyssey" site with full episodes because they're playing my favorite season on the radio (speaking of which, I'd better go so I can wake up early so I can listen to tomorrow's episode before Grandma comes)
And Mom had to go into work at nine tonight (meeting)

Got my hair “majorly thinned out” and “shorter than it was, but long enough to put in a ponytail if I wanted.”
Holiday wasn’t as packed as it is on other Fridays, which both surprised and pleased Grandma.
I took the Cadillac, as the standard doesn’t do well at all in the parking lot.
The bill at Holiday was $17, and I told the woman to “take $2 for yourself, so the only change I got back was $1.
After that Grandma and I went to the Driver’s License Center to get my photo ID updated. They didn’t have the correct address, and now they’re enforcing the rule stating that one must have valid ID to vote.
It cost me $13.50 to get the card updated (which surprised both Grandma and myself as we’d heard they weren’t charging for renewals). Grandma wrote a check, and when we got back to the apartment I wrote her one.
Lunch was McDonald’s. I got a grilled chicken sandwich, fries and Coke.
Got two catalogs in the mail (which immediately went in the trash pile), and three Digital Talking books:
- “Black Rabbit Summer”
- “The Reversal”
- “Adam”
