Grandma's coming up for lunch tomorrow. She's coming earlier, as she needs to be home by 1 or so because she has to keep an appointment to charge her car's air conditioner. I'm treating her to lunch for her birthday, which is on Tuesday.
Grandma received cards from people all week, and was surprised that some people had her address.
Georgette slept in yesterday, so we had lunch together instead. On the phone she told me what she wanted, so closer to the time I ordered the food: a large turkey salad and a diet soda for her; a large fried chicken salad and a regular soda for me. I forgot to tell the guy to keep the tomato and onionoff mine, so all told I talked to him five times (the second call was because he accidentally disconnected us when he put me on hold, the third was because I hung up without givin him my address, and the fifth was him letting me know the delivery guy had already left). The cost of the food was $18.82 for both ($8.88 apiece plus tax). Georgette paid me for hers when she got here. (It almost shames me to say this, but I confiscated her bread, feeling she shouldn't have it since (a) she's diabetic, and (b) she's grossly overweight. (Part of me feels bad, the other part doesn't because I was just looking out for my friend; if she can't seem to restrain herself from eating that which she shouldn't, what else am I supposed to do? Aside from all that, she's also got mental issues, which only compound the problem.
Mom's on her way to the Butcher Shop today. Then she's going to do some exercise and come over here to help with the laundry. Yesterday she went out to dinner with a friend and did a walk/run over at a new trail between South Hills and the High School (it's kind of like the Rail Trail, but not as secluded).
I went down for the mail yesterday and found Skip "checking the stats." (The "stats" are these levers we slide over at our mailboxes to say whether we're OK or not. Most everyone has to slide theirs every day before 3, but I signed a paper saying I didn't have to).
My mailbox contained just seven digital books (I'm waiting for that Medical Assistance Form I was told was coming; the deadline for those to be filled out is the end of the month, and I've already received one call from my MA caseworker.

Dear Diary, Am so upset because I missed the deadline again. The Medical Assistance packet was sent to me May 6 and due June 1 at the latest. Worst part is, I had a hunch it was due last month, but dismissed the feeling as I didn't think I'd received it. To add insult to injury, Grandma noticed it had come and not me! Now, Mom is mad at me for being irresponsible (a common theme lately) :(((

I'm not surprised you're upset! Does that mean you miss out on some benefits or payments, and can you say "I didn't get it/know I'd got it - please can we start again"? Will your caseworker plead your case?
My GP showed me a graph of my weight plotted against my blood sugar control. As my weight climbed, so did my blood sugar. They were almost the same line. The bread can go, and the Stone Age diet is in - if you can't eat it raw, or roasted on a stick, it doesn't get eaten. Good luck with yours, Georgette.
Happy birthday Grandma!

Called Mrs. Hayne today. She said as long as the form gets to her by tomorrow, everything will be fine. If it goes in the mail, and isn’t to her by Friday, then she’ll have no choice but to stop my benefits (like she did last year). There’s a drop box at the office, and is there any way it can be dropped off? What does she need? My most recent bank statement, as well as the signed form.
Call to Mom’s cell relaying message. She’ll get it when she gets off work. Likely to be mad at me still for making busy week busier for her. (I apologized for being irresponsible, and for being mouthy—I can’t seem to keep from lashing out at her when I’m mad at myself).
Fortunately, Grandma called yesterday to ask if she can come tomorrow instead. That way she doesn’t have to rush around, and she doesn’t have to leave right after she eats.
I had a can of soup for lunch (Mom forgot to bring the stuff she got me at the Butcher Shop), and I don’t want to order out before tomorrow (it’s not just the calories I’m worried about; it’s more the financial aspect).
I do realize I need to lose weight, but I also feel the more Mom nags me, the less I want to exercise and watch my food intake. If I do lose the weight, it’s less likely to be something she said and more probable to come from inside me. (I do agree with her that it’s not about clothing size, but about health).
This week’s made more interesting by the fact that Mom’s pushing herself to exercise more so she can lose a considerable amount of weight. I think she overdid it yesterday; I know I certainly did. (I better stop writing so I can get a bath and get about half of my exercise routine out of the way).

BACK TO SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR
======
Sue called before I was awake to say my package had arrived. Later, after I was moving, I called to let her know she could bring it up. It’s now sitting in my closet, waiting to be assembled.

MY UNCLE'S BIRTHDAY?
======
I had to take several breaks before it was done, as it jarred the emotions so, but I finally finished “Justice Hall”. It’s one of the few mysteries in which I guessed correctly the identity of the killer. Oh, I was tempted at one point to change my mind, but later I went right back to my original guess.

IF THERE'S ONE THING I CAN COUNT ON IN THIS FAMILY, IT'S DRAMA
======
Cousin Daryl’s getting married for the third time—the shower’s in a few weeks—and two of his siblings think it’s funny. She has a 9-year-old and he a 16- or 17-year-old, and apparently she wants more kids. And it looks like only the immediate family, meaning the parents, are invited to the bridal shower. “Maybe they’re not inviting the aunts and everybody.” – Grandma

I CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON AUNT JANICE TO MAKE A BIG DEAL WHERE THERE IS NONE
======
When I moved into my little apartment, I brought over things mom, Grandma and Janice had given me. Among the items Janice—and her husband Bill—gave me was a TV. I never got Cable installed because (a) I was afraid I’d wind up spending too much for a service I rarely used, and (b) thinking that there were other uses for the space it sat on.

Two years later, I’ve decided to buy a flat screen variety. I really do appreciate the gesture—thinking of me—but, space is limited in the apartment, as indicated above, and the tabletop could be put to much better use without the TV on it.
Until tonight, I kept forgetting to call Janice and Bill to see whether they wanted the TV back or not. Answer: “We’ll get back to you within the week.”

ANOTHER ONE DISCARDED BEFORE IT WAS FINISHED
======
I just started ‘The Poll uters: The Making of Our Chemically Altered Environment,’ by Benjamin Ross and Steven Amter. SazIt’s one of the few books the library has sent me on science topics that didn’t immediately put me off with the technical nature of the writing—or a writing style I can’t get into. From the ‘book jacket,’ I found myself disturbed: |

‘”The Polluters’ reveals at last the crucial decisions that allowed environmental issues to be trumped by political agendas. It spotlights the leaders of the chemical industry and described how they applied their economic and political power to prevent the creation of an effective system of environmental regulation. Research was slanted, unwelcome discoveries were suppressed…” (Oxford University Press Web Site)

Two birthdays, two days: yesterday, Michael turned 40; today, Daryl celebrates his 46th.
And speaking of Daryl, Grandma has ten bags of newspapers to give him. She keeps trying to get ahold of the man, but it’s hard as he doesn’t have an answering machine. His logic? “Why would I want to do that when I can’t talk to them anyway because I’m not home?”

Chris came at 1:30 this afternoon, and we discussed some goals so I can be more independent: (1) to regain my confidence in leaving the apartment; (2) to go downstairs for the mail using the Cadillac; (3) to cook from scratch using the microwave—and, possibly, learn to use the gas stove; and (4) use the stairwell for exercise purposes. I did forget to add one, which is to use the trash room regularly again. On Friday, when we meet again, I’ll be sure to mention it.

Today, all we really focused on was going from the apartment door to the door of the elevator; Friday, we’ll actually go downstairs for the mail.

Last night when I talked to Bill, it was apparent he didn’t want the TV. “Don’t you have someone you can give it to?” Yet, when I mentioned Jubilee, he told me they’d have to get back to me. For whatever reason, me giving it to a consignment shop doesn’t sit well with them.

Technically, I wouldn’t have had to ask. I could just have gotten rid of the TV. But, to be nice… and where does it get me?

Mom said she’d donate her pumpkin bread in a jar.
Grandma came up for lunch, helped me sew dclothing labels into the shirts from Janice, then walked with me around quarter of 2. When asked when the meeting would end, she was told: “I don’t know. It’s a bunfch of women.”

Marilyn took down our ideas and used them to create a sign-up sheet. While AI was sitting in the meeting, Grandma took the mail upstairs and hung the shirts on hangers in my closet, then came back down for me.
