I live near Sydney, Australia but I must admit I like Melbourne because of the old buildings and churches which have been retained. I also like the layout (probably because of the chaos of Sydney) and the trams.

I agree, I think Melbourne is the best city in Oz, particularly for the arts.

Hard to choose between them really...Sydney is beautiful but I think Melbourne is more interesting. Also, favourite for what? Living in or visiting? I chose to stay in Canberra because it has lots going for it, especially if you want to raise a family here. But we visit both Syd and Melb quite a bit as they are great cities too.

I've never visited Australia so am unable to offer an opinion on your choice.

However, I live in Salisbury UK, a small city of about 40,000 residents and have never found anywhere else I'd prefer to live. We have 5 rivers in the area, surrounded by countryside and with as many ancient sites and buildings as you could wish for, such as Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral.

I was very lucky that I could choose the place where I could live rather than the other way round. I chose Brisbane in Queensland in Australia. I scored the Trifecta: Best city in the best state in the Lucky Country.

Besides my hometown of Beaumont, Texas, USA, I love our capital city of Austin, Texas, because it's so friendly to the blind & other forms of disabilities.

Greatguggly Yes, Austin is a great town. Been there once. It's clean and well kept and has a great music scene. I went to New Orleans for the second time this September. I was pretty intoxicated most of the time while I was there but it did seem like they're doing a decent job there recovering from the Hurricane. Although I probably did not see the hardest hit areas. It's not like we went sightseeing in the 9th Ward.
