Topic: A Quick, 'Beastly' Challenge - COMPLETE

Subject: A Quick, 'Beastly' Challenge - COMPLETE
Date: Jul 02 12

Once again we have a bit of a quickie here and I know what you're thinking-- another challenge? So soon? BELIEVE IT.

For this challenge, like the cats one from last month, we need five different quizzes, each one submitted to the 'Beasts of Myth' section of Humanities. Each quiz must be on a different single Beast of Myth and each must be a topic without its own quiz already online.
Please keep in mind all the guidelines for the Humanities category and make sure to play as many as you can to avoid duplicate questions. Please also make sure to note in the Editor Notes box that you are submitting for this particular challenge.

You may announce that you are claiming a certain mythical creature in this thread, but names will not be attributed to the numbers below until the quizzes are online. Good luck!

Completed Quizzes

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

I'll check back once I've done the Olympics quiz and caught up with the sprint. This week has been hectic!

Hope you can do one, Rossian. The editor said mine should go the general, unexplained, category, so it won't be in here...even though it was a beast and a myth. As I understand it, I couldn't put enough of what it had actually done - since it was really a benign beast and hadn't done too much of interest except scare people just by being.

So, have at it. I know yours will do well!

I was afraid of that for you, Lee.

The mothman is not a beast of myth at all; a beast of myth is something that definitely did not exist in Roman, Greek, Norse, etc, mythology.

The mothman, however, is something we are unsure that exists or not... It is therefore considered a cryptid, and is more "unexplainable" than "myth".

I was hoping it would work for ya, but I guess it didn't. ;)

I love cryptids, so I figured mothman would go there instead. Not so fond of the mythology, though.... ;)

Next we should do an unexplained challenge in general. :P

I only clicked enter a few times; how did those gaps get so massive?

I hope the Mothman quiz still sees the light of day-- I find the topic fascinating. :)

Oh yes, indeed. I love cryptids. :)

Did anyone ever see the movie about the Mothman?

Have-- love it. :)

No... I love cryptids, but the mothman does tend to frighten young children.... As well as me. ;)

Some of the cryptids frighten me for some reason, but then, I would go swimming in Loch Ness without a problem. Even though I believe Nessie is real. :P

Nessie probably wouldn't get you, but you would probably freeze to death.

Wild haggis is difficult to catch this time of year but you may see them running down the mountainside at dusk.

Well, I have to be honest, until I did this quiz I thought a "beast of mythology" was ALL of them...the Yeti, Sasquatch, Mothman, Centaur, what-have-you. I didn't realize there was a difference. They're allegedly all beasts and allegedly all myths.

Go ahead. TELL me to believe their was a Centaur. Just try it. After I get done laughing...

It depends; something can have its own mythology, but typically those in the Humanities category are based on ancient stories.

The Mothman is still an unexplained event from the last century. Who knows-- maybe a thousand years from now, our descendants will recall the Myth of the Mothman. ;)

To fit in Humanities, it needs to have a mythology or set of legends developed about it, and not just a collection of reports about unexplained events. Mothman may become a figure of myth, if people record enough stories of its actions. Cryptids may have numerous reports of sightings, but don't tend to do much other than be seen (or not, depending on your point of view). It takes time to build up a collection of stories about the creatures!

There are many cultures with beasts in their mythology (although some would call it their religion, as the spirituality is still an active force), not just the familiar Greek, Roman and Norse. Australian Indigenous cultures have many legends of animals who formed the landscape and whose spirits interact for good or ill with humans. It would be possible, but would require some research, to write a quiz on the various stories about one of them, since different tribes have different stories. We would really love to see some quizzes that explore the myriad of beasts to be found in myths from around the world!

Of course, there's the bunyip... Both a beast of myth AND a cryptid. ;-)

Though I view it as more cryptid than myth, but I don't know much about the bunyip, either, so... ;-)

Daaanieeel You guys have got my interest up on this topic. :) So, considering I have plenty of time and I'm in a particuarly quizzy mood, I'm going to start a quiz on my favourite beast- the griffin (or gryphon, depending on where you live). Even if it doesn't make it to this challenge, I'll still have fun writing it.

Someone should do a quiz on a wyvern (my favorite). I would, but I had tried and didn't find enough material to use. :-P

Play my Bunyip quiz and find out about some of the myths. It could also be handled as a cryptid, but that's not the tack I took for this quiz. The Yowie, now, that's definitely cryptid. The Rainbow Serpent, myth.

SBH Well done, the cockatrice!
