What would you do if a stranger knocked on your door, claimed there was an emergency, and requested your help; perhaps to use the telephone?

I'd offer to phone which ever emergency they needed, without letting them over the door. Sad I know but you have to be so careful.

Greatguggly The problem is that if someone really wants to get in, they're going to. Unless you have a mean dog, a gun, bars on all the windows etc... there's not much you can do to stop them.

I'd ask my hubby to answer it. He's scary! lol

beachbumb101 I would probably dial the number for the person or call the police. You can't just let anyone into the house these days. It's hard to trusrt people.

Greatguggly The reason I own a gun.

lesley153 I just read the first page of comments and I'm sure Heather Elliott is sorry she wrote anything. "I shall count to ten. If you haven't gone away by then, I'm going to get very cross."

One thing you need to understand about the US Lesley, the gun is a very important aspect of life here. Agree with it or not, it's here to stay. I consider myself liberal in my beliefs, but I am also a gun owner. You just about have to over here. Preventative measures. :^)

If I was a woman living in a particularly bad area of anywhere USA. I would own a 20 gauge pump shotgun. 12 if you could handle it.

Most times the mere sound of a pump action shotgun being loaded is enough to scare a burglar from trying to enter your home. If not. . .

I can use a gun but I don't own one. There are other security measures that can be taken before the thought of a gun should be necessary. You also don't have to acknowledge a knock on your door. Either they will show evil intent or they will go away.

C30 Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending upon viewpoint), whilst it is relatively easy to own a gun in this country, it is becoming increasingly difficult to LEGALLY own one.
The local forces of law and order issue firearms licences with the enthusiasm of a miser dishing out money.
It of course in no way deters the criminal element who don't bother with licences anyway!

As to the original question on the thread, I am sorry, but the answer is "No" as the risk these days is simply too great.

C30.

Please tell me and everyone else how it is becoming increasingly harder to 'legally' own a firearm in the US. Please don't just spew out ideology. Give me real references that pertain to the nation as a whole. I want to seriously know how the 2d amendment is being compromised.

Because if an amendment to the Constitution is being compromised, we need to look at the balance of powers. You know, checks and balances.

I have a hard time understanding why I haven't ever had a
problem purchasing a firearm legally. 'Ever'. I don't suspect I ever will have a problem. The gun industry actually is probably quite happy whenever a Dem becomes president. Last presidential election when Obama was elected, that November had a 48% spike in 'legal' gun sales. Seems to me a lot of folks could have saved some money. You know why? You can still buy a gun 'legally' now just like four years ago.

Remington, Winchester and a few other manufacturers of fine firearms were probably silently snickering (as a corporation) people. They'll grab money (and rightfully so) from any ignorant who doesn't understand how the government works.

2d Amendment being abolished? You may as well throw the entire Constitution down the toilet.

lesley153 Bernard, of course I understand that. Did you read Heather Elliott's comment?

And did you also check C30's profile before you assumed that he was American?

This isn't the place for gun discussions.

C30 Sorry Box.........I was talking about UK, not USA! I used to be active in the re-enactment scene, you wouldn't believe the performance necessary to have a licence for a musket!

Sorry...........agreed thread not about guns..........apologies for digression.

Greatguggly In the wake of the recent mass shootings, the White House is taking full advantage of these tragedies in an attempt to enact stricter gun control laws. In a session with the press, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney indicated that the Obama administration would use their power to push for gun control. He accused Congress members of failing to enact stronger gun control laws and told the press that the Obama administration would likely take action without congressional approval.

Also, Attorney General Eric Holder said "We need to just brainwash people into thinking of guns in a vastly different way."

Ok----somebody's knocking!

Politics and guns? Pah! We now have a law here that states any privately owned weapon (firearm) must be concealed.
Gone are the days when I could trawl through town with my 357 hung low. Almost as low as my jowls.
Anyway, I'm going for gas pistols from now on. Great for shooting geckos. Magnums, even small ones, make a bitch of hole in the ceiling.

Greatguggly Leave the thread. Guns have a place in this thread but it didn't have to lead into politics. Though I didn't take it there, I jumped at the chance to continue in that vein. I've had my own threads removed because of politics but I have no right to jeopardize someone else's thread. Sorry about that, HannahConner88.

You don't have to say you're sorry to me C30. I apologize to you. I should have been a little more insightful before I 'spewed' out my thoughts.
