okay, I'll admit I'm totally stumped. Your author died in the late 1980's?

Author died middle of 1990's.
Book title contains a word that was translated into another language for the film title.
Both book and film are about mutation (not of humans.)

It probably feels like you've been guessing for a year!
Don't give up; I'm sure, if you burrow around a bit, you'll get it.

That's the one! It was filmed as "Night of the Lepus".
Thanks, Upstart; I was beginning to feel like a silly bunny!

It's a novel.
The Appalachian Trail does pass through the state where the novel is set.

"The Bridges of Madison County"? (I must admit I don't recall what state that was set in-the midwest?)

That one is set in Iowa where the trail doesn't go. My state is in the NE and begins with "New".
My one was published half a decade later than "Bridges..".

Spot on, my friend. And there was I thinking you were absolutely nowhere near. Method in your madness?
"American Pastoral" by Philip Roth - the man who Wikipedia believes is an unreliable source of information about Philip Roth - sadly, he has recently said that the well is dry and we won't see any more of its ilk.
