was the book "required reading" for school? Or simply one you enjoyed reading at some point during your school years?

Agh sorry studying for finals took priority over Funtrivia for a little while! None of the books guessed so far are right though.
I read it for my own interest in high school, but it's required reading all over the place, at least in my experience. Here's a hint- we WERE initially going to read it in my 12th grade English class, as there's a rather tenuous link between this novel and a certain Polish author who, in my opinion, we read far too much of that year. :)

Author not American. Still living, he's often on the short-list for the Nobel Prize.

Was it originally written in English, and did the book win any major literary awards?

The novel was originally written in English. I can't find any significant literary awards that the book won, but the author won a Booker Prize nearly 50 years after this book was published.
Here are some hints: the novel has a sequel, and its title comes from a very well-known poem.

Oops, missed one of salami's questions. Written in the third quarter of the twentieth century.

(The Polish link was to Joseph Conrad, who Chinua Achebe famously attacked as a racist in his essay "An Image of Africa"..."Heart of Darkness" remains one of my least favorite novels)

Thanks for the good clues! As an English teacher, I should have figured it out a little sooner, since it's a popular choice in AP English classes.
This is the first novel in a popular mystery series by an American author.

1st To Die, James Patterson?
Is the series finished, or is the author still working on it?

Good question. The author says the series is finished, but who really knows?
Oh, not Patterson.

Perhaps you are being cryptic, and I see this book appear in many "mystery" lists... So perhaps you are being as sneaky as possible, and the answer is......
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?
Is the author male or female?

did the protagonist of the series get killed off?

No, I promise, I'm not being cryptic. It's not Harry Potter, and the author is male.
The author implies that the main character dies in the last book, but it's not explicitly stated. (Guess that way it's easy to write another one if you want to.)

"The Black Box" (2012) (Michael Connelly)?
Is his protagonist also male?

The protagonist is male, but this is the first book in the series, written late 20th century.
Not Harry Bosch (I hope there are lots more of those books still to be written!)

"Rules of Prey"? (Lucas Davenport series by John Sanford)
(I agree about Harry, Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors)

Good guess, but not that one. The author is a favorite of a former President (still living.)
