Again, on so close but not the right author. My "home base" is in Colorado.

I know, my daughter reads them. Her husband says she only likes books with food in the title!
Back later today with a new book (I'm out of state and wi-fi is spotty.) Will be back home this afternoon my time.

I like those recipes in Dying for Chocolate. I haven't read the book, but the recipes are great. :)

Kind of continuing along Jakeroo's path, this is the first book in an historical mystery series by an American author.

Nope. set later than the Civil War, and most of the books do not take place in the U.S.

Nope, not Elizabeth Peters, but the time period is roughly that of the later Amelia Peabody books and the varied setting(s) are somewhat similar.

No, not that. I'm not familiar with that book---who's the author?
A clue: the central character is female, and the main male character is an enormously famous fictional character who has been incorporated into the novels of numerous authors over the years.

Carolyn McCray is the author
is the mystery man Sherlock Holmes?

Carolyn McCray isn't the author, but the much-loved (and much used) character is, indeed, Sherlock Holmes.

Ok, Paul, I'm a complete doofus! I'd forgotten my above post and realized after I posted my reply that you were responding to my question. (I'm slapping myself upside the head.)
