The novel was, with many changes (none for the better), adapted into a movie very soon after its publication.

Is the author one who is now known for working with numerous "co-writers"? (Eye roll included with sarcastic tone.) ;)

There have certainly been co-writers for recent novels. I think you're onto this dog-loving author!
In the novel in question, there are references to a very famous cartoon character.

Sorry, Tobyone, not Cujo.
The dog is a hero.

I'll take the blatant hint and guess "It".

Which doesn't have a dog as a hero. Withdrawing that embarrassing flub. :)

Where the Red Fern Grows?
No clue how soon after being written the movie was made, and I can't think of a cartoon character reference, but, you know.

None of the foregoing.
The novel was published in 1987, the author's first novel was published in 1968.
The author (who isn't Stephen King) had a very unhappy childhood.

Dean Koontz' "Watchers" seems promising.

Spot on, salami_swami. Watchers is a fascinating story; I cried for the "Outsider".
What book are you?

I haven't been able to get on for awhile (coming back over the Atlantic now) but just wanted to say I LOVED "Watchers". I still think it's the best book he's written. What's the cartoon reference in it, though?

"the one fantasy they most wanted to believe in, the fantasy they clung to the longest, was Mickey Mouse. They were enthralled by Mickey's adventures with his cartoon friends" (265-66).
No to the guess, by the way.
