That's it! A great series for all ages, with continually developing characters, solid world-building, and very interesting plots.

Upstart has guessed correctly, it is 'The Fatal Shore' by Robert Hughes which details the transportation of convicts to the penal colonies of Australia and in my opinion should be compulsory reading for all high school students here. The recently deceased Hughes was also the art critic for 'TIME' magazine.

Aussiedrongo, it is a brilliant book and I must re-read it - - very good choice.
My book is a 1960s novel.
