For the avoidance of doubt, the opera is not in English. And it's from the 18th century, if that helps.

No - there's nobody's name in the title.

I'll give a clue.
Rufus Sewell would no doubt have starred in a televization of the book in due course, but the series got canned.

All I can think of is "Tristan and Isolde" but that doesn't sound right...

Sorry - I've turned it into "what opera am I?"
Nobody's name is in the title.
The opera is not in the German language.
The book is based in the country whose language is used in the opera.
The novelist died in 2007, in the US.

Okay, I'm the first book in a series of books by an American science fiction author. My author is still alive.

My author has many things in common with Chip Delany. About the same age (a scant few years younger), born in the same general area of the U.S., recipient of awards such as the Nebula and Hugo (along with some that folks outside of the genre might not have heard of lol).
There are nine books that "fit" this particular series. Three of them comprise inter-related/connecting short stories. I don't recall many animals (nor any dragons) in any of them - but there were a few canines and a cockroach for sure lol.

Not "Ringworld". With a few exceptions, pretty much all of the time spent in the books is here on "present-time" Earth (depending on your perception of time I guess lol).
That being said, my author IS in the notable company of Larry Niven, along with only 13 other recipients (to date) of a significant "lifetime achievement" award that is administered by a society in Maryland.

Neither sorry.
I was written in the late 70s. In the late 90s, a video game for PC was released by the same name.
My author has dual citizenship and has made Canada his home for many years. His name is not William Gibson lol
My stories usually have a fireplace, some friends and some of the "worst" original puns you've probably never read. While serious themes/events happen, they are always treated in an upbeat, sometime humourous, manner.
