Would it be classified as serious fiction (as opposed to a genre like mystery, chick-lit, etc.?)

Serious fiction - Pulitzer and all that - although the story features some non-serious fiction.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay, by Michael Chabon. If it's him, good show---I love his writing.

You've got it - what a brilliant book. Can't recommend it highly enough.
I only heard of Chabon because I couldn't sleep and put the TV on at about 3am and he was being interviewed on the BBC. Lucky break.
Over to you.

I don't know about you, Upstart (man or woman?) but I grew up devouring comic books, not just the superhero ones, but everything from Tales from the Crypt to Archie. Learning a bit about how they all began was fun.
Ok--new book. This one is also a novel.

No, why must I be gone when The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay comes up? ;) Reading The Yiddish Policemen's Union right now, and it's good but not nearly the same...
Was the novel written in the twentieth century or later?

She is an American, and the book was indeed written 20th century or later.

Adams--if you like baseball, read Summerland by Chabon. Technically YA, but not simplistic at all.

jabb--It was one of my favorite novels when I was younger actually--then when I got assigned Kavalier and Clay for class a few years ago, it was a shock to realize it was the same Michael Chabon :)
Is the novel set in the United States?

It's not Alice Hoffman, and yes, it's set entirely in the U.S.
