The novel itself has not been made into a movie.
Yes, it was written after 1975.
Yes, although this novel (arguably the most famous of its author, perhaps tied with a later work) was never made into a movie, other works by this author were. No musicals that I can find, though.
A minor plot clue--the protagonist's son in this novel plays chess with a convicted criminal, via mail.
