Far more well known than that one. It has become an iconic work, and adults and children everywhere are familiar with the first part of its story because of a movie based on it.

Neither of them--the subject of the book might have been a real person, and historians still debate whether this noble person actually lived.

hmm, the Once and Future King is actually a tetralogy/compilation of previous works (including Sword and the Stone) and wasn't published in entirety until 1958, which puts it outside the range of the clue given to be published in the first half of the 20th century.
The Sword in the Stone (1938) is the actual (and sole) title of the book, but only if we're talking about the author T.H. White lol.
Is it a book about Merlin instead?

Then Jakeroo, you've got it---my edition has all four parts as 'The Once and Future King' with a copyright date of 1939. That overall title is what I was looking for. Your turn.

if you have a copy in your hands that says a different date, then that's more than good enough for me.
Paul, you're up!

Nah, you knew it, and I was probably just too picky in expecting the overall title. I'm sure Paul doesn't care. You go, and I bet he figures it out first this round!
