since you put the word song in quotes, I'm going to guess that it's something more "spoken" than sung.. so will take a wild guess with "All That Jazz"

The musical itself was first performed in Broadway towards the end of the 1950's followed by its appearance on the West End stage about a year later.
Not Guys and Dolls nor All that Jazz.
J'roo, you've more or less hit the nail on the head about my quotes, the song is partly spoken/sung badly to fit the situation!

Spot on J'roo ... that was a real classic in my view, the more times I hear it the more I appreciate it.

Okay folks, it's not as hard as you might think from the first clue LOL
Once translated into English a few decades later this song became a huge hit for at least three artists and over time, has been recorded by more than 30 well-known entertainers.

Methinks you have it! Did not realize how many times that song was recorded, or that it was originally German!

But I will go with Die Moritat von Mackie Messer, just in case jakeroo was looking for the German song. ;P

I'm going to say 40 is "very young" and go with Imagine, John Lennon.

From the 1970s.
The songwriters were both younger than Lennon when they died.

British songwriters.
The singer who did the best known version also died too young.
The singer who did the second best known version is still with us.

Well, I guess the question should be "are both singers male"...

The two songwriters were also singers and were male.
The most famous version was done by a male.
The second most famous version was done by a female.
