Hi,
My son-in-law was impressed by my addiction to FT and my "success", in his view:)- (I consider myself average, by the way), anyway, he gave me a copy of New Cryptic Crosswords by Daily Mail for Christmas because he thought that would be something for me. The other way around - I am lost. It´s too difficult for me. Nevertheless, why not to share some. (I know the answers as they are at the back of the book:))

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

I had also thought STRIVES mdurnanj for similar reasons, but as you say it doesn't fully fit the clue.

Wow! I think you have it with STUDIES mdurnanj!

Tries to understand the way the turn fades :

I'm going with Acacia.

From earlier games, I have decided that "ac" means "bill" in the UK. So, 2 "AC" is ACAC. I assume IA means First Class in some way, and ACACIA is a plant.

You're almost certainly right with Acacia, Salami.

You said "I assume IA means First Class in some way, and ACACIA is a plant".

A1 means first class and if it's 'raised' becomes 1A.
