Hi,
My son-in-law was impressed by my addiction to FT and my "success", in his view:)- (I consider myself average, by the way), anyway, he gave me a copy of New Cryptic Crosswords by Daily Mail for Christmas because he thought that would be something for me. The other way around - I am lost. It´s too difficult for me. Nevertheless, why not to share some. (I know the answers as they are at the back of the book:))

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

I´d like to confirm your answers, but my son has arrived and now he is sleeping in what was his room and what is now my study. I have left the book there and I don´t want to wake him up, so wait till tomorrow:)

19 Draws out what´s left in ruined cities (7)

ELICITS - "draws out", and results from "L" placed in scrambled "CITIES"

houston1127 19 ELICITS has already been done, MD! But it must be correct since we both got it!

All correct.

Oops - sorry, Houston. Paging back and forth iseems to be too big a challenge for me...

I do that too!

I think these are the ones left still to do:

1 Reason for ban where one´s not allowed to go (9,6)

3 Paid rising rates to accommodate Welshman (5)

5 Do badly in strike that´s official (7)
6 Current means of making progress (8,7)

8 Accounts for one leaving the shops (6)

23 Hire to get into a fight (6)

I'm not certain but possibly ENGAGE, which can mean both to hire and also to fight, eg. to engage in warfare.

Another one I'm not certain of without crossing letters:

ELECTRIC RAILWAY?

I like electric railway. I was trying to think of something that went along a water current, or possibly an atmospheric glider.

Both are right.

I'll guess FORBIDDEN PLANET because I can't think what else it could possibly be.

Explanation hazy. :(

FORBIDDEN yes, but not PLANET. But you are close.

FORBIDDEN REGION ... because it has the right number of letters?

houston1127 FORBIDDEN GROUND, perhaps?

Ground = Reason

houston1127 8 Accounts for one leaving the shops (6)

STORES

i. STORIES = Accounts
ii. minus "I" = one leaving
iii. STORES = Shops

houston1127 3 Paid rising rates to accommodate Welshman (5)

OWAIN

i. OWN = Paid
ii. AI = rising rates (1a)
iii. OWAIN = Welshman

I think your Forbidden Ground might be the one houston.

I'd toyed with both Forbidden Forest and Forbidden Places, but neither seemed to completely fit the clue.

Well done with STORES that looks right for certain, but I'm not so sure about OWAIN. Hopefully jolana will be able to bring us up to speed shortly!

Nr 3 (with the Welshman) is wrong. The others are all right.

Upstart3

I think it's IDRIS.

It's hidden in the phrase

...paID RISing...

and Idris is a Welsh name.
