Topic: Cryptic Crosswords

Subject: Cryptic Crosswords
Date: Dec 27 12

Hi,
My son-in-law was impressed by my addiction to FT and my "success", in his view:)- (I consider myself average, by the way), anyway, he gave me a copy of New Cryptic Crosswords by Daily Mail for Christmas because he thought that would be something for me. The other way around - I am lost. It´s too difficult for me. Nevertheless, why not to share some. (I know the answers as they are at the back of the book:))

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Thanks, Jolana. It was time for some hints!

14 Unhappy feature covering wife murderer (9)

BLUEBEARD - Blue="unhappy" and Beard="feature covering" ... and Bluebeard was most unpleasant to his wives.

CIDER, perhaps? CID=some kind of British police force ... and ER = Elizabeth Rex?

Don't know what the pie is, though ...

houston1127 I think CIDER is correct. Jolana might be talking about apples--preferring to make apple pie rather than apple cider.

CID might stand for Constable (police) and ID for identification (presented). Maybe?

Well done with CIDER ..

CID is an acronym for Criminal Investigation Department.

We still have one more to solve ;)

It seems we are stuck on the final clue ...

1. The take that surpasses everything (7)

A good friend of mine who is not an FT member but is considerably more able than me in solving cryptic crosswords, has suggested BETTERS (surpasses everything), but feels it would only fit the clue if the first word was 'They' instead of 'The'.

Unfortunately this doesn't really fit the extra clue given by Jolana ;(

Umm, how is it biscuit? I'd like to know the link. :)

It has to be biscuit as the only word that fits that pattern, and there is a common English phrase 'take the biscuit', but it's not the best clue I've ever seen! ;)
