A very interesting book - "Three Cups of Tea" - about an American mountain climber who decides to build schools in the mountains of Afganhistan.

"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame Smith. I purchased the deluxe heirloom edition, wich contains "ultraviolent zombie mayhem" and truly dreadful illustrations. The book is a real hoot and a very quick read - if you like Regency Zombie novels.

I started Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow", but after only about fifteen pages, I couldn't take any more. The book's almost impossible to understand: I understand that there's supposed to be some deeper meaning in it, but if I can't follow the plot, characters, setting, etc., then really what's the point? Definitely do not recommend the book.

Finished up that new Stephen King book Under the Dome in about 5 days reading time. That book is on the gas pedal the whole time - hard NOT to crank through 200+ pages in one session.
Just starting The Curse of Lono by Hunter S. Thompson right now. Been looking forward to reading this one for a loooong time.

I am reading "The Gathering Storm" the latest in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan; well kind of, they got a ghost writer to use his notes to finish the series, looks like there will be three books. So far I am impressed, it reads well :)

I also have read The Lovely Bones before seeing the movie. I am just about done with Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. These are both just wonderful reading.

I am reading "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair and it is absolutely horrifying but makes you appreciate improvements in working conditions here in the USA over the years.

Just finished "The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society" - just gorgeous.
Haven't enjoyed a collection of letters so much since I first read "84 Charing Cross Road" twenty years ago.

Cross, wasn't it just gorgeous... made me want to find out more about the history of the place...I don't think I even knew that Guernsey had been occupied during WW2.. the history I learned at school covered 18 - 19th century British & some European history and 20th Century Australian political history.. so I have a lot of gaps.

I'm reading "Dies the Fire". It was recommended and so far is good, I'm just hoping that I don't get too many ideas from it, and then share them.

As I think I may have mentioned in the Mystery Books thread, I recently read the latest Robert B Parker "Spenser" novel. While thinking about how much worse his books in the last twenty-five years are than the first ten, I decided to reread the first few books in the series. They really are excellent, up until maybe 1984 or so. He was doing something that nobody else ever really did - seriously exploring feminism through the lens of tough-guy machismo, without making either of them ridiculous. Too bad all he's doing now is moving cardboard caricatures around.
