"Teenage Life"? What Does Daz Sampson Know?

Well, the British Funtrivia users have probably come across our (or at least the English; I'm not sure how that works exactly) Eurovision Song Contest Entry for the year.

For those who don't know, representatives from a selection of European countries have to write and perform a song, and are then judged by the rest of the countries. The winner then gets to host the next contest.

Anyways, this year, for some reason, the public decided to go with 30-something white rapper "Daz Sampson", and his rap, "Teenage Life".

I have a few problems with this.

My first was that a rap is centred around lyrics and understanding them. What the hell is the point of submitting a word-based song to Europe when they won't know what it means? The novelty value of the song - which let's face it, is all it has - will be completely lost on anyone who hasn't mastered English.

My second...Well, see that's the only problem I have with the song being submitted for Eurovision. I couldn't care less about the competition. I'd heard of it when I was young, and after Jemini's disastrous performance ("Null points" still rings through my head), I was sworn off it completely.

The second criticism I have is with the song itself. Daz seems to be trying to appeal to the misconstrued teenager by reminding us that it was a long time since those teachers were teenagers, and therefore, they know nothing about teenage life.

Daz Sampson is middle-aged. How the heck does he know any more about teenage life than teachers? The only people who do know about teenage life are TEENAGERS. And despite the fact that this period is the same for every generation with minor changes to the insults and terminology, some really desperate rapper isn't going to convince us he can empathise.

My third...I've run out. Let's just go with that Daz is a "Wigga": A term coined by Snoop Dog on his show "Snoop...something-izzle-my-fizzle-nizzle" that describes a white man trying to be black. Oh yeah, and he's a Chav.

I will be really surprised if this isn't another entry wasted for Britain.

Now that I've had my say, have yours. Keeps the cosmic balance in order.

  • I posted about this on my blog too. Maddeningly catchy song isn't it? But even though that's what usually the voters go for, the memorable songs rather than the good ones, we still won't get very far. Everyone hates us. I'm thoroughly ashamed, but I have a certain fondness for the song because of all the reasons you listed for hating it. I find it very amusing that a bloke who's about 45 is rapping about being a teenager, and the sleazy chorus is just marvellous.
