Just thinking out loud...

Name:breezin

Concerts then, concerts now.

About 35 years ago...spur of the moment... I hopped in a Chevy van (or was it a Ford?) with some friends and took off to Little Rock to see the Allman Brothers Band in concert.

I must admit, my memory is hazy.  I remember it was a good....no, make that VERY good, concert.  The Marshall Tucker Band opened, and they were fantastic.

Last weekend, I had a chance to go see the Allman Brothers Band once again.  My goodness, has it really been 35 years?  Needless to say, it wasn't quite the same.  Greg Allman, although aging (he even uses a cane) is still very good vocally.  I'm not sure how many founding members are still in the group......only two, maybe three, I think.....but the new guys were pretty good.

You know how, in the middle of a concert, there seems to always be a drum solo, a L-O-N-G drum solo.....giving the other musicians a break off stage?  Well, this concert was no different.

In brief, the "solo" ended up being a four man jam session, and I have never enjoyed a percussion intermission more.  It was incredible.

It wasn't the concert of 35 years ago, but it was fun and I wasn't disappointed.

At least I'll be able to remember this one.  :-)

  • I can relate. I've been to a few concerts in my past (starting in 1993) that I have very little recollection of.

Anything I see now, though, remains crystal clear. Glad you had fun!

  • DH and I are trying to make a point of seeing some of the older folks before....well, you know.

We only just started this....and so far, have only seen Greg Allman, the Marshall Tucker Band, and Merle Haggard.

Well, we did see David Allan Coe, but we don't count him, LOL

I refuse to go see Robert Plant with Allison Krauss. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for the comment Pagiedamon. :-)

  • Had an opportunity summer before last to go see Merle Haggard in concert. I always liked old Merle, even though as a teenager, I would hide my 8 track tape under the seat of my car so my rockin friends wouldn't find out. LOL

The concert was very good. He had a good band, and he sang as well as ever. It was fun, hubby and I enjoyed it very much even from our balcony view.

I must say though, it looked more like an AARP convention than a concert, heh! There were plenty of young folks there, but more of us 'over the hill' gang.

I'm glad I got to see Merle. He ain't gettin' any younger either.

  • This was not exactly a concert, but once in a lifetime thing for me. To see Judy Garland at the Hollywood Bowl.
Was looking forward to it for months. Had great seats, went to dinner before and settled in our seats. There she was, just steps away from us. My husband started to move around in his seat and then bending over etc. Well, he was in so much pain, appendicitis attack, bad timing, had to leave, and drive him to emergency. A very memorable time. Think we were there about half and hour, better than nothing I guess.

  • That's quite a story Joan! Too bad you didn't get to see the concert...but at least hubby was OK!

That's closer than most folks ever came to seeing Judy Garland in concert, I'm sure. Neat.

  • The last concert me and my hubby went to, was Joe Satriani. Now we both love the guy's music and have all his albums but they just didn't quite get the sound right at the venue. Maybe it's old age, I don't know but it was so loud and just not as enjoyable as I thought it would be. We left before the end and felt terrible about it but our main concern was getting home for the dog and getting out before the crowds! There was a football match on that night and the home side lost and there were lots of unhappy people roaming around. We were so glad we left when we did. This would never happened 35 years ago, you understand!

  • I remember getting in a 1954 Chevy pick-up and traveling to Tulsa to see George Harrison. Leon Russell and Billy Preston were also in concert with George. Wow...what a concert. When I moved to San Antonio, I was able to see Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and a reunion tour of Led Zeppelin. I was fortunate to be able to see a lot of people in concert over the years.

  • Oh my, you've been to some fantastic concerts, longcoolwoman2! I always really liked Leon Russell. George Harrison was my favorite Beatle.

I wish I'd had the opportunity to see Stevie Ray. From what I've seen of him on televised concerts, I bet he was amazing!

Of course, most of all....you saw ZEPPELIN! WTG!

  • I've been to several concerts over the years. Def Leppard has put on a great show everytime. I saw them in 1987, 2006, 2007, 2008, and have tickets for this years 2009. They have aged like a fine wine.

STP, Poison, Dokken, Sebastian Bach, Journey, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, and ZZ Top all put on great shows last year.

The worst concert I've seen was Motley Crue a month and a half ago. They've become overtly sexual in their videos.

I haven't seen how concerts have changed. Then again, I go to headbang.

  • DaveTV, what some great concerts you've been too! I would love to have seen Journey back in the day. Or now, LOL

ZZ Top has got to be timeless. Thanks for the post!

afulton1112, sorry, I don't check this blog often enough or I would've talked to you already. Been to any good concerts lately?

  • I went to see Loretta Lynn in concert February 2008. She was awesome!

    By SlowHand123, May 23 09 12:50 AM

  • I've heard that Loretta will sit in a chair on stage and talk to the audience, sing whatever they ask her to sing, and just really "visit" with everyone. Yeah, she's an awesome lady!

    Thanks for sharing, SlowHand...
