The Fat Side of Life...

Since I have put on so much weight, I have been having a hard time walking, my feet and legs swell at the blink of an eye. Just depresses me so.

Clothes that I would like to be wearing do not fit, and I am forced to wear fat clothes...oh the horror of it!

I feel like a blow-fish! Egads! It is even worse during that unwanted time of the month!

Not to mention the fact that I am going through the change of life, so highly hormonal at times. Along with high blood pressure, a thyroid problem, Type II diabetes...Shall I go on? I just do not feel like doing anything.

There rant over...for now.

  • I hate to read that you are feeling the way you do, but I don't have any magical answers, wish I did, but would never give you the old, "Chin up now, things could be worse, so get over it." You feel the way you do and you don't like it, plain and simple!

The only thing I could suggest is having your meds checked because they might be less effective due to the hormones running rampant now. It can make a huge difference and the tests are relatively routine to find out.

Rant all you want - it's better out than in. Let's just hope no little idiot of a man decides to make a comment again to you about "How pretty you are, BUT if...". I had to throw that in there!;)

  • Sound advice from Sandy, and hugs from me. If I had the answers, I would look like Kate Moss.

  • Hey Agnes. That "time of the month" is the worst, isn't it? Does the thyroid problem make it nearly impossible to lose weight? I ask because my aunt has thyroid issues which make it difficult for her to lose weight. :-(

  • I lose some weight with the thyroid medication. However, when the milligrams need to be adjusted (which is approximately every 3 months), I lose energy and feel very sluggish. Once my medication is adjusted, I will have a three month energy spurt and then zapp-o! Nothing, not one ounce of energy, not to mention feeling sorry for myself because I cannot lose the weight. It certainly is not for lack of trying...I eat properly and walk, just that the weight seems to want to stick around when I want it to go.

Had a big issue in January of 2007, when I was in the hospital for two weeks flat on my back with viral menegitis (which is hard to catch, and lucky me..er um...not! I got it). Every since then, my thyroid levels have been all over the place. Ah, well have to have blood drawn and pay a visit to my doctor.

  • Well, I guess I can't give you the ol' "eat well and exercise" advice. Hmm...it seems very unfair that your medication is causing you to lose energy, which in turn makes it difficult to lose weight. I'm sure you've spoken to your doctors about this, but I wish I had something useful to offer. I used to work at a gym in my earlier days but your issue is more complicated. Are you happy and pepped up on your 3 energy months?

  • During those 3 months when the increased dosage is working, I have no problems doing anything, and I love it! However, as soon as I start to feel sluggish etc., etc., I just know that it is due to my thyroid medication. Every single time this has happened, I was correct, and my doctor was amazed that I knew it was the thyroid medication...as my blood-work indicated that my thyroid levels had increased. Ah, well, if only I could feel like I do during those three months all the time! Then it would be look out world! One of these days.

  • Agnes, check out this article: http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/conditions/05/10/healthmag.thyroid/index.html.

Hope you're in your "look out world" phase right now! :-)

  • Agnes - you got viral meningitis - well done - I'm impressed! I've had things I was lucky to get too. With luck like ours...

Paige, that's a superb (informative, accessible) article, thank you. It's frustrating to be told that there's nothing wrong when you know there is; and when doctors and nurses blame every new problem on an existing condition, and it takes months before they acknowledge that it really is something new. Who'd be a doctor - they can't get anything right!
