Worst day ever
Actually I'm sure it's not the worst day ever, but my worst day I can remember in recent memory.
As of this morning, I had only a page and a half written of my 10 page essay that was due last Thursday. By 3 p.m., I had 9 pages done. Then MS Word decided to be a @#!$$! witch with a B, and when I hit 'save' (like I do every 5-10 minutes when I'm writing) instead erased everything I'd written and corrupted the file. And I couldn't get it back, at all. Not only was what I'd just written was gone and not saved, EVERYTHING was gone. My brother came home at 3:30 and started teasing me ("oh, finally writing that essay, slacker?"), but when I burst into tears he decided to be helpful and somehow recovered a "rescued" document, that had most of the text I had written, with interspersed gibberish, and it was not in order at all (sentences and entire paragraphs were moved around and split up). So I had to piece it back together and totally re-do all my footnotes.
On top of that, my dad decided that this was the funniest thing ever and was laughing at me while I was upset and crying. And still now is mocking me for crying. I swear, sometimes I dislike him a lot.
And because of all of this excitement I forgot to record on my PVR tonight's broadcast of the lecture for my television class. Which means if I want to see, I have to go sit in the viewing room at the campus television station for three hours and watch it on a computer. Not that big of a deal, but on top of the essay fiasco, seemed like the end of the world. I much prefer watching lectures in the comfort of my own home. Pretty sure they won't let me watch in my underwear in the viewing room.
Sigh.

Aww, GG, I'm so sorry to hear about all the work you put into the essay only to lose it. I rarely pop into the blogs, but did this evening and saw your note. Hang in there kiddo, get some rest, tomorrow will be better! Has to be, sounds like it couldn't be much worse.
Cordially,
June (Jar)

Your paper will be even better, for all the trouble it was! Don't mind Dad, he's got to see the humor. Probably from something equally awful in his school days!
Hang in there!

There's nothing like a loving, supportive parent!
Good for your brother for helping. This ((((())))) is for you and him.
Will you get different software now, as in NOT Microsoft?

GG, that's terrible. I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me. Unlike you, I often forget to "save", so the fault is then entirely mine.
Hope you get a good grade for all the effort!

Thank you all for the sympathy :)
Lesley, I think I'll be sticking with Microsoft, as I don't know how to use anything else, lol. I do dread when I buy a new computer having to switch to Office 2007. It's confusing. I like my 2003 version just fine.

That's good if you're generally happy with MS, but you'd be able to learn to use a new word processing program just as quickly as you learnt to use Word, and you might find another product less unstable. It's worth investigating, I think.
So that's your shopping list:
- new non-crashing WP
- new non-laughing father
- new underwear for wearing in the campus viewing room.

I think you found that nearly everything typed and saved at least once is very hard to delete altogether. The amount of lost blogs and chat posts I retrieved for people was pretty incredible, many were also incomplete but easy to fill in the gaps. I enjoy detective work and am always looking for apparently lost stuff, sometimes successfully. Could you borrow the lecture from someone else rather than having to watch at college?

Aww gg, I'm sorry about your paper. Same thing happened to my sister last week. I know how frustrating it must have been to you. Shame on your dad for thinking it was funny.
Office 2007 isn't that different from 2003. I had some issues finding the hanging indentation and double spacing at first but finally figured it out.
Good luck with the paper and I hope today was better for you!
