The Grand Adventures of guitargoddess

Random musings, boring stories, or possibly a lot of whining

In other news, not much to report here

Not much to report, except that I'm very nearly almost done my degree! One exam tomorrow morning, and one final large paper due on Monday. And that's it. :)

Unfortunately, absolutely no prospects on the job front. Apparently four years of university has qualified me to do nothing.

Wednesday afternoon update:

I checked my e-mail this morning, after having ignored it all weekend, and found that a job prospect has been sitting there since Friday. Well almost a job prospect. It's from government "Collective Staffing" that says I seem to meet the requirements to be entered into a pool of "various administrative support positions", but I have to prove that I actually am qualified, so I have to spend my entire Saturday afternoon doing testing to show how bilingual I am. I am, technically, bilingual; have my certification from the Ministry of Education that I received with my high school diploma. Trouble is that was 4 years ago and I haven't learned anymore or used any French since then. Other than reading, I'm fine with reading a text in French and understanding most of it. I should also have no problem speaking conversational French, it's the "written expression" test I am concerned about, especially since it's a multiple choice "which of these phrases is grammatically correct in this context" kind of thing; haven't been keeping up with memorizing grammar rules. But, I need only medium level bilingualism to be entered into this pool of candidates, so I hope I do alright! Bad news is this gov. department is located in Gatineau and I live in Kanata... I realize that means nothing to you guys, but it sucks, lol. Kanata is a suburb, so it's enough of a commute to the downtown core.. Gatineau is a little further, just over the river. But it's in Quebec. And it's dirty Gatineau (though I'm sure business-daytime Gatineau is different than Gatineau nightlife). And I'd have to take the bus if I get a job there :(

  • Pass on the careers advice, but you have an exam? Good luck! (Break a leg!)

  • Thanks Lesley, the exam went medium-well I think. Good enough! :)

  • I hope so.

That's interesting, that you're good with conversational French, but not formal French.

When I was learning French at school, it was regarded as equipping us for studying French literature. The idea of using it for conversation was ... distasteful, almost grubby. So I could read Voltaire, Molière, Saint Exupéry, but I couldn't ask you to pass the salt.

    Your way is better. IMHO.

  • I think they look better without the accents - Moliere, Saint Exupery. Yes, no strange symbols popping up in the middle of the names.

  • Well I was fine with formal French when I was studying it in school, but when I tried to take French in my couple of years of university, they told me my French was too good and I'd get too high of a mark in the class so I couldn't take it. And I think the next level higher was not available to me at the time, having only second-year status. And then eventually my schedule was too packed.

  • So you can't take a subject you'd be too good at. Restores your faith in the education system, doesn't it? No, me neither.

  • Good luck in the job market.
