Chances

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who went to a carnival with her mother. The carnival was a magical place with rides and games. There was one game there that interested the little girl particularly. It was a game of chance with the greatest prize she could ever hope to have, guaranteed to give her everlasting happiness. The little girl figured she had enough money to play the game three times. She took a deep breathe and placed her bet on the number 24 as it was a number that she had felt was a friend for many a years and a great deal of comfort to her. It seemed that the wheel kept on spinning and spinning, but finally it stopped and she realized she had lost. For her next turn, she decided to be a little wild and chose the craziest number she could think of. She figured maybe the key to winning this prize was to unlock her secret emotions and take a risk. This time the wheel only spun a short amount of time before it stopped, with the little girl losing again. The girl's mother, realizing that her daughter was almost out of money, asked her to go about her next choice in a different way from the previous or not try at all. The little girl felt like she had to listen to her mother as her mother had given her the money but really wanted to try again. She decided to save her last bit of money and go see what else the carnival had to offer her. Her mother decided she could trust her daughter so she went off on her own. While the little girl was walking along, she came across a similar game with the same prize. This game looked like it was more dependable than the previous two. It was older and the wheel looked more solid. It looked much fairer and kinder to her. The girl was so torn between risking it all or keeping her promise to her mother. She really wanted that prize and she knew if she actually won it this time, her mother would be happy for her in the long run but if she lost again, her mother would be let down by her.

This story is metaphorical if you can't tell and the little girl really has no idea what to do. What would you do if you were her?

  • So the "little girl" shared this story with "the third bet". He seems to think we should move slow and I agree. We have plenty of time. I'll keep you all posted if anyone seems interested. It was one of the more nerve wracking experiences of my life sharing this story with him but now I'm glad I did.

  • You can tell what a totally, thoroughly, miserably unimaginative lot we are, can't you?

Not too much older, I hope.

Yes please to the offer of more news.

  • Lol! I can't write for crap but he seems to like the metaphorical stuff. Tells me daily that I am the light in his darkness. He's 36, I'm 28. Is that too old? We both have issues we are trying to resolve in our personal lives so nothing is going on yet. It's just out there.
