Computer/Internet Death

Ahhh computers...gotta love em'. Mine died.  It was quick and painless. Oh, the computer had no pain...no...but for me it was a nightmare. You know, the withdrawal, the sweating, the shakes, the "what the heck am I gonna do with myself now" feeling.

And naturally, I'm computer illiterate. So I had no idea how to fix it. I called the cable company, the tech supports, my friends, family and the guy down the street who lives in his boxer shorts. No one knew what was wrong. One week. I was offline one week. The sobbing was horrible, the screaming, the crying. I sounded awful.

Then, common sense returned to me. I decide to replace the Ethernet cord. Not the card mind you, but the cord. Simple really. Just drive to Wal-Mart, pick one up, drive back home and take the old one out and put the new one in. Plug everything back in. (No, it just couldn't be something this simple, come on I'm a college graduate).

I reach out, just barely touching the on/off switch, and press it. Ok, everything turns on ok, hmmmm, I gently put my hand on my mouse (no no the mouse hooked to the computer, not the one running amuk in the kitchen), and I click on the big Mozilla icon. I'm holding my breath....and EUREKA!! I'm ONLINE AGAIN!!

Now I want to kill myself. :)
*note:  they have medicine out now to combat the withdrawal symptoms. It's called "dial-up".

  • Withdrawal symptoms take 3-6 weeks to subside, depending on what activities you have outside of the computer.

I want to have internet at home!

  • Lol, I remember those good old days when we only had dial up. Then the day when our connection decided to not connect, leaving us internetless for months (our computer crashed during that time too). That was the time when I figured that there was a life besides blogs and internet. It was intersting, made me think about how long I use to spend on the computer, just surfing the web, and what was the point of it. I came up with an answer, but now that we got wireless (aka fast internet) I've forgotten it and now I'm back where I was before...

  • I've always considered msyelf a "techno-moron" but even I have flashes of insight now and again. I too was having problems with my computer. I put it into a computer shop to be repaired and they swore that there was nothing wrong with it. End result, they did nothing and I paid $60. I discovered that they used their own mouse with the machine, so I asked them if they had tested MY mouse. They said "Oh no, it can't be the mouse". Figuring that they knew what they were doing, I believed them. Took the computer home and it wouldn't work. Took the computer back to them and the same thing happened. They said there was nothing wrong with the machine - another $60 please. I took it home again. Again it would not work. Each time I asked them to check the mouse and they insisted it couldn't be the mouse. When I picked the computer up the third time, they neglected to ask me to pay for it, so I didn't (normally they won't give it back until you do). On the way home, I stopped off and bought a new mouse - cost $60, coincidentally. When I got home, it worked fine and no problems since (that was years ago). Then they phoned me to ask me to pay up and I gave them an earful. I refused to pay on the grounds that they did not test the mouse as I requested and it turned out that it WAS the mouse at fault. I asked for them to refund the money paid previously, which of course they didn't. But it just goes to show that gut feelings are often very accurate, even when you don't really know what you are doing!

  • Kalofgorons, I have Roadrunner through Timewarner cable. I love it. It's fast, I've never had one problem with it, it's never been down for any reason (other than my cord being bad..my *duh* moment). However, it is a little expensive. I pay 49.00 a month. But it's well worth it.
