Fed up with cold phone calls? Just say: ‘Can you wait a moment?’, put the phone on the side and walk away. Go back half an hour later and they will have gone.
Annoyed with junk mail? Open it up, take out the pre-paid envelope and send it all back to them.

In one of Bill Bryson's books, he suggests that more people should tear up junk mail and return it in the prepaid envelopes, as it would make more of a point if lots of people did it.

My math teacher told us that, for both of them. He also told us that with those people who call you to try and sell you stuff, put them on hold, go do something, go back and say just hold on for a little more and keep on doing that until they hang up.

Many, many years ago, I got junk mail from a particular firm. In a foul mood at the time, I gathered some dead (!) insects in the return envelope and sent it. Suffice to say I never got mail from that company again.
