The Sea Claims its Own
Today was the day that the sea took what it wanted that I held dear... my sunglasses. These sunglasses had been everywhere with me, from Honduras to Cuba to trekking across deserts to Scuba diving at the bottom of the sea. The had rarely been off of the top of my head, even when it wasn't sunny and warm, because we were inseperable.
Until today.
I took a day off from all that was hectic and routine, and went with my sister to the beach. The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky, the water was warm, and the beach wasn't too full. So, after resting on my towel for a while, I decided to go in the water. Seeing as the waves started to get really strong, I transferred my glasses from my head to my hand. Unfortunately, I had my back turned, and a partucularily large and strong wave broke right on top of me, dragging me and knocking the breath out of me. And also, the damned wave knocked my sunglasses right out of my hand, or maybe I let them go when I was dragged under, I'm not too sure, I was struggling to break surface and get some air.
It's like losing an object that was almost an extension of me, with much more than sentimental value. Sure, I can get new sunglasses, but they'll never be the ones I had.
And the sea, well, it claims its own.

Believe it or not, Leo, I can actually relate to the importance of losing something like that (even though I rarely wear sunglasses and wouldn't be caught near [much less in] the ocean under any circumstances). I remember a post I had in my ear that my roomie gave me once - I had one and she had the other and, it was intended, as long as we wore those earrings we were connected no matter where we were. I lost it mowing the grass some years later and was devastated (it was as if the relationship went with it ~ it didn't, but it felt that way at first). Sorry to hear about your specs, though. Just be glad you didn't drown, yes?

This should be in an anthology. You are a great writer. It's so sad about your sunglasses. I always have to get mine from a dollar store, because I misplace them a lot.
