Weather Forecast

I usually follow the weather pretty closely in my area.  I often look at the weather page in the newspaper and go to weather.com when I wake up just to see what I can expect.

Weather forecasts are usually to be taken with a grain of salt if you're looking at any sort of extended forecast.  What I saw today, though, I had to write about here.

According to one local newspaper, the high temperature on Friday, March 23 is supposed to be 63 F.  Another local paper says 59 F.  According to weather.com, the high temperature on Friday is supposed to be 45 F (taken around 6:30 pm eastern time).  What does Cleveland's weather master, Dick Goddard, say?  He edges toward the lower extreme: 50 F (6:00 news extended forecast).  All these forecasts were taken on Tuesday, March 20.

It's not unusual for different sources to disagree slightly on the forecast, but this is a difference of almost 20 degrees between the extremes!  I'm not sure what could cause such a disagreement, but now I'm interested.

Obviously the two extreme sources are using different methods to calculate the high temperature.  I want to know who is better.  We'll see on Friday what the official high is and whose method is more accurate in this case.  My instinct is to go with Goddard, but we'll have to see.

  • I have noticed the same type thing myself sometimes. We print out the weather for the week so we can plan just in case. Its supposed to be nice, and we get snow dumped on us...
or its supposed to be very inclement, and the sun is shining. There were times when we had tornado warnings or we were snowed in & wanted to see how much more we were to expect, and the weather channel didnt even mention northern Wisconsin LOL. They pointed out places to watch out with less weather. We often joke that they dont know where northern Wisc. is. I know what youre saying about temps. I have a weather thing in my truck telling me what the outside temp is...its always different then what they say on the radio....change the station, and its different. "?". I am still waiting for Spring...we got lots of snow again the other day. When will it end? ~Joanie~
