Most salmon live in fresh water during birth, mating and death but live out most of their adult life in the salt water ocean. The term for this is anadromous, but there are salmon that live their whole lives in fresh water. Difficulty: Hard.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) can grow up to 75 cm length and about 4.5 kg weight. Young salmon start hunting after a few days and, as they grow bigger, they move towards the sea. Most Atlantic salmon that go out to sea, wind up to the west of Greenland.

When the Atlantic salmon became threatened by overfishing, various farmers started aquaculture of salmon. The salmon from large aquafarms are usually fed more shrimps than the wild species consume, in order to obtain the delicate pink colour of the flesh.

The bigmouth buffalo is a pure freshwater fish from North America. It can reach 1.2 m length and 29 kg weight.

The armoured sea robin is a bottom dwelling fish, living at the bottom of tropical seas up to 200 metres in depth.

The eeltail catfish is a fish with several barbels at the head, and a serpent-like tail. It lives mostly in the Indian and Pacific Ocean.

It always been believed that all fish are cold-blooded animals. Enter the opah. In May 2015 scientists rocked our idea of what it means to be warm-blooded when they announced that this amazing fish is the world's first warm-blooded fish. According to NOAA, because opah are not a major seafood species and they live in the deep ocean, scientists know little about their biology and ecology and had assumed them to be similar to other Pacific Ocean pelagic fish. Now nearly everything we know about the opah is up for reinvestigation.

The scientific name for the opah is Lampris guttatus. Holacanthus bermudensis is commonly known as the blue angelfish. Carcharodon carcharias is the great white shark and Carssius auratus is a goldfish. The pelagic zone, also called the open-ocean zone, is from the Greek (pélagos) meaning "open sea". Difficulty: Hard.

A Chinook salmon can lay the most eggs. This species of salmon is the largest type of Pacific salmon and is known as the Chinook 'king' salmon, sometimes even just the king salmon. This fish is a prized catch for most fishermen due to its size (22 to 50 inches)! Difficulty: Hard.

Though most often the clownfish is viewed as an orange fish with white and black bars, there are actually over 30 species of clownfish recognized. The designs vary in color and pattern, but the orange clownfish is the most widely recognized species (also the species of Marlin, Nemo, and Coral in the film). Difficulty: Easy.

Barracuda tend to swim towards divers and swimmers as they think that the swimmer is a large predator and that scraps of food will be left after a kill. They don't often attack humans unless the water is murky or they are attracted in some way. Difficulty: Hard.

Goldfish are the most common types of aquarium dwellers. Although goldfish can be a golden color, they are not always this way. They can range in color anywhere from white to black. Black moors are also called telescope fish, so-called for the protruding eyes. Bubble-eyes also have protruding eyes; sacs filled with liquid! They can pop, so you need to be careful if you have some in your tank. Other goldfish include: comet, fantail, pompom, and veiltail. Difficulty: Average.

27 species of clownfish belong to the genus Amphiprion. The other 1 species belongs to the genus Premnas. Difficulty: Hard.

Chinese paddlefish is correct, the others don't even exist. The Chinese paddlefish differs slightly from the American in that it has more triangular, pointy snout than the nicely rounded one of Polydon spathula, and it also grows much bigger than its American relative.

Sadly, scientists declared the Chinese paddlefish extinct on September 15, 2019. Overfishing, as well as habitat loss, led to its demise. Difficulty: Easy.

The Picasso triggerfish has a truly unique look, and can be found on Hawaiian reefs (and Hawaiian hats, Hawaiian t-shirts, Hawaiian coffee mugs . . .). The other names are Hawaiian for: moa = trunkfish, kokala = porcupine pufferfish, and nunu = trumpetfish. Difficulty: Hard.

The Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)is a carnivorous species that is well suited to community tanks due to their docile behavior. Difficulty: Hard.

The chinook, or king salmon, is the largest. Specimens over 100 pounds have been recorded. Difficulty: Hard.

Different kinds of anchovy come in different sizes, with some as small as 2 cm and some as large as 40 cm when they are adults. European anchovies are on the smaller end of that scale, although the largest recorded specimen is over 20 cm (8 in).

If your mental image of an anchovy is smaller than this, it might be that you are thinking of the fillets that are used as a pizza topping; these are obviously smaller, since the head and tail portions of the fish are not included. Difficulty: Hard.

Yellowfin tuna can reach up to 94 inches (2.4 meters) in length and 440lb (200kg).

Many sport fishermen prize the yellowfin hunt due to their strength and speed. Some of the places where hunting trips can be organized are California, Mexico, Hawaii, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The brown trout (Salmo trutta) is a medium sized fish, growing up to 1 metre length and about 20 kg weight. Some brown trout stay all their life in the same river, some swim towards a lake, and some go up to sea to mate.

The goblin shark is a type of shark found in deeper waters (100 meters or a bit more) near Mexico, Brazil, France, Senegal, South-Africa and Japan.

Jewel cichlids are very brightly coloured fish from Africa. Most of the West-African species live in freshwater or brackish water.

A sailfish is one of the four genera belonging to the Istiophoridae family in the Perciformes order. The sailfish's genus is Istiophorus. Difficulty: Hard.

Of the 27 species of barracuda, the great barracuda is perhaps the most easily recognized. Barracudas are scavenging fish, and therefore have been known to bite humans. They view the human as a predator, following them for food. That's when they bite (thinking they're going to get a morsel of food falling from the mouth). Difficulty: Average.

Barracuda eat other smaller fish, such as mullet and sardines, although they will attack larger prey, which they tear chunks from, rather than swallowing whole. They do not prey on human beings, coral, turtles or birds. Difficulty: Very Easy.

Bogue (boops boops) is 10-30 cm long.
Vogue is the prevailing fashion, rogue is a dishonest or unprincipled man and pogue is a pejorative military slang. Difficulty: Hard.

Elephantfish can generate weak electrical fields to help sense their surroundings in muddy river water. Some species also have enlarged snouts to help them find food in muddy African river bottoms, further leading to the moniker. Difficulty: Easy.

Some people are even lucky enough to own their own marine aquarium with clownfish. Clownfish are a very popular choice to keep because they are very hardy, meaning more easy to keep then other fish species. Difficulty: Easy.

The 'bull huss' is the other given name to the greater spotted dogfish. There are other names too, such as nursehound. Difficulty: Hard.

One of the most exciting sights in sport has to be a 4-6 pound largemouth leaping out of the water, angrily trying to toss the hook. The largemouth can be identified from other similar species by the fact that their upper jaws reach far beyond the rear margin of the eye. Difficulty: Hard.

These odd-looking fish are found on sandy seabottoms, and love to feed on mollusks and crustaceans. Come to think of it, I love to eat mollusks and crustaceans too! Difficulty: Hard.

The rapidly reproducing Gambusia affinis is still being introduced in waters where it's not a native, to control mosquitoes-- sometimes with devastating results to rare endemic fishes. "Barbus viviparus" was a biologist's gaffe; the fry in its body cavity had been a last meal! All of our native darters are oviparous ("egg-layers"). Difficulty: Hard.

The yellowtail snapper is not afraid of divers; the fish often approach them. Difficulty: Hard.

The spoon-shaped lures that fishermen use to attract the larger pikes are believed to move and glitter like the living prey. Difficulty: Average.

The vulnerable basking shark, at over 20,000 pounds, is the second biggest fish in the ocean. They swim with their large mouths wide open in order to feed on plankton. Because of over-fishing, many of the basking shark populations are now endangered. Difficulty: Hard.

One kind of slug (counterfeit coin) really could get into a vending machine. We hope the blue glaucus (Glaucus Atlanticus) never does, as it carries toxic cells within that can deliver a painful sting to a human who touches it. It gets these venomous cells from swallowing bits of Portugese man o'war and jellyfish which it eats. Somehow, it's able to store the poison in its own body and then use it to defend against predators. This small sea slug looks like some kind of tiny winged lizard-dragon, with pointed dark blue appendages (cerata) fanning out from front, middle and behind. Its maximum length is three to four centimeters. Its back is silver/grey and its ventral side (stomach) is bluish. It floats upside down on the ocean surface, and these colors provide camouflage against predators above and below. the blue glaucus is one of over 85,000 species in the phylum Mollusca. Difficulty: Hard.

The Atlantic bluefin tuna was referred to as common tunny in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand before the more current "tuna".

Due to overfishing, in 2011 the Atlantic bluefin tuna was classed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an endangered species.

This tuna lives between 35 and 40 years, reaching a length of 6.6ft (2.0m) and 1,508lb (684kg). Difficulty: Easy.
