Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the largest city in South America in 2003?

Answer: Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo had about 22 million people, but it is difficult to know for sure because there are so many homeless people. Rio had 14 million people, Buenos Aires 12 million, and Lima 9 million.
2. Which spectacular waterfalls are located near the border of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay?

Answer: Iguacu Falls

Iguacu Falls are located on the Iguacu River, and soon flow into the Parana River. In local language, Iguacu means "Great Waters." The falls are made of more than 200 separate waterfalls, making it the place with the most waterfalls in the world.
3. Machu Picchu is a great lost city in the mountains of Peru. Which civilization built it?

Answer: Inca

Machu Picchu was built literally on top of a mountain. It is all made of stone which was carried from elsewhere on the mountain. Hundreds of terraces line the mountain, making it easier for the Incas to climb and farm.
4. Which famous scientist came up with the theory of evolution while visiting the Galapagos Islands?

Answer: Darwin

Darwin's controversial book, "The Origin of Species", was the one of the first to suggest that living things evolved from a common ancestor, and weren't just created in seven days.
5. Manaus, a city in Brazil, is surrounded by the Amazon Rainforest. What is Manaus' average rainfall?

Answer: 90 inches

Even though Manaus is located in the heart of the massive rainforest, its climate is not considered tropical. August is a comparatively dry month with only two inches of rain falling. This means Manaus has a climate classified as tropical monsoon rather than tropical rainforest.
6. Which European country was Suriname's main colonizer?

Answer: The Netherlands

The Spanish were the first to actually colonize Suriname, but soon lost control of it to England and the Netherlands. They continued to fight over it until the Dutch traded in the "less useful" colony of New Amsterdam, modern day New York. The Netherlands controlled Suriname from the late 1600s until 1975.
7. What South American country is considered to be the leading exporter of roses?

Answer: Ecuador

8. Which British territory did Argentina invade and attempt to hold in the 80s?

Answer: Falkland Islands

In 1982, after hundreds of years of disagreement, Argentine troops invaded the Falkland Islands to show once and for all who controlled the territory. Britain didn't like that however, and forced them out. Today, around 2,100 English-speaking people live on the islands, and it is officially British, but Argentina still claims it.
9. How many countries or territories does Brazil border?

Answer: 10

French Guiana (owned by France), Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. In fact, the only two South American countries Brazil does not border are Ecuador and Chile.
10. What desert in Chile is sometimes considered the driest place on Earth?

Answer: Atacama Desert

Most places in the desert only get .004 inches of rainfall a year. Some places have not seen rain for over 400 years. The average temperature is not as hot as you'd think it would be, ranging from 32 degrees F to 78 degrees F (0 - 25 C).
