Ancient Egypt Trivia Questions

1. Which animal was the goddess "Bastet" originally associated with?

From Quiz
Ancient Egypt: The Great Civilization of the Nile

Answer: Lioness

Bastet (earlier known as Bast), or Ailuros in the ancient Greek religion, was worshipped as the goddess of love, fertility, sex, joy, mystery, magic, music, the sun, and most notably, cats, throughout most of Ancient Egyptian history. At first, she was a lioness god, but as time went on, the cat became her totem animal. Sekhment, another Egyptian goddess, was considered her alter ego, as she depicted the fighter aspect of Bastet.

2. Amarna was not the original name of Egypt's new capital. In fact, its name looks much like the name of the city's founder, Amenhotep IV, who changed his name early in his reign. What was his new name?

From Quiz Tales of Amarna

Answer: Akhenaten

Amenhotep IV, a younger son of Amenhotep III, was not in line to be pharaoh - his older brother Thutmose was the crown prince. When Thutmose died at a fairly young age, however, Amenhotep became his father's heir. In 2014 it was announced that evidence had been uncovered that suggested that both ruled together for eight years before Amenhotep IV became pharaoh in his own right. For five years he ruled Egypt and began building temples to the god Aten (solar disk) in the capital city; then he changed his name to Akhenaten, which means "Effective for Aten", and began work on a new capital city called Akhetaten, or "Horizon of the Aten". The modern name of the city, Amarna, is taken from the Beni Amran tribe that lived in the area in the past.

3. What was the most common ailment among the Ancient Egyptians?

From Quiz Ancient Egypt

Answer: Respiratory problems

Respiratory problems were caused by the sand and they didn't have a cure for the problems but the coughing was soothed with a mixture of herbs and honey. There were frequent outbreaks of tuberculosis.

4. Who discovered the Rosetta Stone?

From Quiz Egyptology

Answer: French soldiers

The Rosetta Stone is a black granite stele, discovered in 1799 at the village of el-Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile Delta by some French soldiers of Napoleon who were strengthening the wall of a fort. The Rosetta Stone was critical in deciphering the hieroglyphs because it contained a text in three different scripts, hieroglyphic, demotic (a form of popular, commonly used script), and finally Greek. It was this last one, which being known, permitted the deciphering of the text. The Rosetta Stone is now in the British Museum in London, as the French had to give it up to the British as spoils of war.

5. Rich Ancient Egyptians were buried with many shabti figures. What, however, did the Egyptians believe these shabtis would do?

From Quiz Ancient Egyptian Burials

Shabti figures have hieroglyphs written on them. The Ancient Egyptians believed that when these spells were read out they would cause the shabtis to awaken and do their masters' bidding.

6. The golden Egyptian sun cuts over the land like a soaring phoenix as Evelyn stands before the only remaining wonder of the ancient world - Khufu's Great Pyramid, which is estimated to be made from 2.3 million blocks of ______.

In order to cut this limestone, wooden wedges were placed inside of cracks. Water was then poured over the wood to make them expand to crack the stone and eventually split it.

7. Who was the pharaoh Djoser's famous architect/vizier?

From Quiz Ancient Egyptian Civilization

Answer: Imhotep

Imhotep was the architect and construction leader of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara.

8. How many categories of funeral procedures were there?

From Quiz Mummy's the Word!

Answer: 3

Mummification procedures varied according to how much money a person had to spend. The cheapest procedure involved the intestines being purged with a clyster syringe of cedar oil, with the body drying out afterwards for seventy days. Secondly, a body could be injected with cedar tree oil after all passages were blocked. Internal organs would be liquified, and the resulting liquid would be flushed from the body. After being dried, all that was left was bones and skin. Lastly, the third and most expensive procedure involved the process of removing the organs and drying the body. Egyptians who could not afford mummification were buried in the sand. Ironically, the heat and sand dried them naturally. Some of the mummies buried in the sand have been found in remarkable condition.

9. About 3,000 years ago, you could have instructed the ferryman on the Nile to take you over to the west bank. Your destination would have been 'Ta-sekhet-aar'. Why was the modern Valley of the Kings called 'The Great Field'?

From Quiz Valleys of the Royal Dead

Answer: Paradise was thought of as a lush field

For the Egyptians, the ideal paradise, life after death, would be spent in the Field of Reeds, dwelling with the gods, surrounded by lush vegetation and life-giving water. While the physical Valley was a place of great desolation and starkness, those who were buried there, by virtue of their death, were already dwelling in the Great Field and enjoying bliss.

10. What Greek historian called Egypt "the gift of the river"?

15. On certain days acording to the calender of lucky and unlucky days some foods were prohibited. What food was more frequently prohibited than others?

From Quiz Ancient Egypt : Part 2

Answer: Fish

According to the Egyptian 'Calender of Lucky and Unlucky Days' fish was considered unclean and it has been suggested that eating fish may have been considered unsuitable for a state of religious purity because it caused the breath to smell. Another version of this also claims that it was unsuitable because of its association with the sea, which was regarded as a place of chaos. So on unlucky days fish was prohibited more than any other food.

16. According to Ancient Egyptian tradition, where was the burial place of Osiris?
