Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the Austro-Prussian war 1742-48. Who won this, Austria or Prussia?

Answer: Prussia

Prussia gained Silesia from Austria during this war, that along with other Austro-Prussian wars was to curb Austria's role in German affairs.
2. Now on to the Austrian War of Succession 1740-48. It was caused by the invasion of Silesia by Frederick II of Prussia. Prussia was supported by France and Spain, Austria was supported by Holland and England. Who won this war, Prussia, France and Spain or Austria, Holland and England? Note: Both parts gained and lost territories, but one of the parts gained more than the other.

Answer: Austria, Holland and Britain

It might be hard to say who "won" this war. At the peace conference in Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) after the war (1748) Prussia gained Silesia from Austria, but France had to return the Austrian Netherlands and the British colonial territories. Hence, the relative "winner" should be Austria, Holland and England. (Please argue if you disagree!)
3. Now to the Second Russo-Turkish War 1787-92. Who won this, Russia or Turkey?

Answer: Russia

Russia won this one, too. They gained land from Turkey between the rivers Dniester and Bug on the North coast of the Black Sea, in the land of the Crimean Tartars.
4. Now we go to the Russo-Persian Wars in the period 1801-28. Who won, Russia or Persia?

Britain and France fought to defend Ottoman Empire (Turkey) from further pressure by Russians. The allied powers distrusted Russia's ambitions in the Balkans. The war was ended by The Treaty of Paris 1856. By this treaty Russia lost the Danube Delta and the Black Sea became neutral territory. In addition to this the integrity of the Ottoman Empire was guaranteed.
7. Yet another Russo-Turkish war 1877-78. Who won, Russia or Turkey?
