Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Twelfth Night
Illyria. It not a real country. It is the Greek and Roman name for the eastern Adriatic coast.
What You Will. It's the play's subtitle.
her brother. She has been mourning him for 7 years.
a shipwreck. Each thinks the other is dead.
Malvolio. They repay him for his arrogance, but I have to say their joke is a little harsh.
Cesario. Viola then falls in love with the duke, but oops, he thinks she's a man.
being a pirate. His country and Illyria have been at war and Antonio supposedly was the pirate who maimed the duke's nephew.
Olivia. Maria writes the love note in Olivia's handwriting.
Feste. Feste is wise in the advice he gives, and sings quite well too.
Belch. He's fat and gluttonous, and likes to drink.
Sir Toby's tricks. Sir Toby goes to each of them separately and lies about the other one until the two are unwillingly forced to draw swords.
Sir Toby and Maria. Sir Toby is so impressed with Maria's wit that he marries her.
They get married. Olivia has already been in love with Cesario and thinks that Sebastian is Cesario. For Sebastian it's just love at first sight.
music. Many times throughout the play he requests songs and calls for music.
some have greatness thrust upon them. It's repeated several times in this play. The particular one I'm referring to is Act 3, Scene 4, line 40.
Antonio. This is after Antonio calls her Sebastian. She has just been in a duel with Andrew Aguecheek, and he comes to rescue her, thinking she's Sebastian, whom he's sort of babysitting. He also loaned Sebastian a lot of money, and now he asks Viola for it back, only Viola doesn't have it because she's not Sebastian!
women and roses . Viola and Orsino have been having a man-to-man talk (or so Orsino thinks) about Olivia, whom Orsino is in love with. Viola has the cheek to suggest that perhaps women have the capability to love as well (remember, she's in love with Orsino), and is rewarded with a long dissertation about how women are totally incapable of love. Most uncharacteristically, she agrees.
He's drunk . Dick Surgeon is the doctor for Olivia. He has been drunk for an hour according to Feste, when Belch and Aguecheek come in with wounds from having tangled with Sebastian.
I wear not motley in my brain. Feste is having a very spirited wordplay with Olivia in this {scene;} they're trying to outpun each other.
Pregnant . Andrew's trying to copy Viola because he knows Olivia's in love with Viola-as-Cesario, and he wants to marry Olivia. For some strange reason he thinks using fancier language will win Olivia's heart (which it won't).
Antonio. Antonio has been in trouble in Illyria before. He was a 'salt-water pirate', meaning he was a pirate and got in trouble with Orsino. It was pretty stupid of him to go to Illyria, where he was wanted, but apparently he really cared about Sebastian.
The Fortunate-Unhappy . Maria, who is in extremely strange circumstances in love with Toby Belch, has decided to trick Malvolio, who is cordially despised by Belch's set, into thinking Olivia is in love with him. She writes a letter to him in handwriting that looks a lot like Olivia's, and tricks him most royally. Olivia thinks he's crazy and has him confined to a dark-house. Toby marries Maria.
Foolish Greek. Viola paid Feste for his music earlier in the play, and now Feste is following her twin around, hoping for more. Sebastian gets irritated and starts calling him names.
Thirteen. This is something Viola asks Sebastian, to see if he is who he says he is. There is a dumbstruck crowd behind them consisting of Olivia and her household, who has just married Sebastian, and Orsino and his retinue, since Orsino has finally decided to ask Olivia to marry him in person.
Sings a song. Orsino calls for Feste to sing. Feste sings a song that mocks Orsino's way of sitting around and moaning about his love for Olivia (II, iv).
How long has it been since the shipwreck at the end of the play? | Twelfth Night II
|
Three months. Orsino mentions this to Antonio when Antonio keeps insisting that he knows Viola-Cesario (but of course he {doesn't;} he knows her twin), and Orsino says that for three months Viola has been attending on him.
Messaline. Viola says in the last scene, when she and Sebastian see each other: 'Of {Messaline;} Sebastian was my father.'
Troilus and Cressida. Feste, trying to get money off Viola, talks about Troilus and Cressida.
Which of Olivia's servants arrested the sea-captain who helped Viola disguise herself as a boy? | Twelfth Night II
|
Malvolio. Viola mentions that the sea-captain has her clothes after everyone finds out that she's a girl. Olivia says, basically, 'Oops! My butler arrested him!'
Andrew Aguecheek warrants that there is what in his challenge to Viola? | Twelfth Night II
|
Vinegar and pepper. Aguecheek's letter is really ridiculous--Toby burns it afterward and delivers the challenge by word of mouth.
December 12th. I noticed this because December 12th is my birthday...
