Answer: White tailed deer

In the original book, Bambi was a roe deer, but roe deer are not native to North America. Disney considered using a mule deer, common in California, but eventually settled on the white tailed deer, common throughout North America. The movie opens with Bambi's birth, in the next scene you are able to see him learning to stand and walk with help from his new friends. We are able to see the distinctive spots of a white tailed fawn and his white tail.

The Great Prince asked him to do this at the beginning of the movie, outside of their home in a hollow log. He gave him until spring to find her. When Bambi ran away from Faline and back to his mother, she chased after him and her mother was right next to Bambi's mother. Bambi's mom told Bambi not to be shy around Faline so he said hello to her. Faline laughed at Bambi once he tripped and fell into a nearby pond. Both Faline and Bambi then started to play around and get better acquainted. Conlon starred in the 1939 films, "Gone with the Wind" and "Blondie Meets the Boss".
