Howard Hawks. This film tells of a small town sheriff and his two deputies, faced with preventing the escape of the murderer they have in custody. Second only to John Ford, Hawks was one of Wayne's favorite directors. They made a number of films together, including some of Wayne's best, such as "Red River" (1948), "Hatari" (1962) and "Rio Lobo" (1970). John Ford directed Wayne's breakthrough movie, "Stagecoach" (1939), among many others. Frank Capra was best known for "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946 and Sam Peckinpah, most famous for "The Wild Bunch" (1969), was a revisionist director, particularly of the Western film genre, whose style was totally inapposite to Wayne's "All American Hero" image. Neither director ever worked with Wayne.
Who played the wagonmaster who was killed for helping Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne) keep Joe Burdette (Claude Aikins) in jail for murder until the U. S. Marshall arrived? | "Rio Bravo" - The Duke at His Best!
|
Ward Bond. This actor was one of the Duke's favorite co-stars; they played football together at UCLA and Wayne brought him into the film industry. Ward Bond appeared in 22 movies with John Wayne and they remained life-long friends. Wayne accidentally shot Bond while hunting. Bond switched easily between good guy and bad guy in his many roles with Wayne. Victor McLaglin co-starred with Wayne in "The Quiet Man" (1952); his son Andrew McLaglin directed Wayne in "McLintock" (1963); both movies co-starred Maureen O'Hara, one of Wayne's favorite leading ladies. Harry Carey, Sr. was a close friend and father figure to Wayne and a member of John Ford's "rolling stock company" along with Wayne. Carey and Wayne appeared in several movies together, including "Angel and the Badman" (1947) and "Rio Grande" (1950), the latter along with other Wayne favorites, Maureen O'Hara and Ben Johnson. Johnson also co-starred with the Duke in "Rio Grande" (1950), "The Undefeated" (1969) and "Chisum" (1970).
Stumpy. Nick-named Stumpy because of an old injury which left him with a limp, Brennan was at his comedic best in this movie as one of Chance's two deputies, having to face Burdette's men. Brennan displayed his characteristic high pitched voice and cackle. Although Brennan played both serious and comedic roles in his long and distinguished film career, this was notably one of his best in the latter category. He was also distinguished for his serious and villainous role as Judge Roy Bean in "The Westerner" (1940), for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award.
Dean Martin. The nick-name was derived from Dude's extended drunken binge after getting involved with a disreputable woman who left town after stealing Dude's heart. Martin appeared in two John Wayne movies, "Rio Bravo" and "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965). Although a member of the notorious Rat Pack of Hollywood-Las Vegas fame, Sammy Davis, Jr. never co-starred with Wayne. Another Rat Pack member, Frank Sinatra appeared in one movie with Wayne, "Cast a Giant Shadow" (1966). Kirk Douglas was not a member of the Rat Pack but he was in three Wayne movies: "The War Wagon" (1967), "In Harm's Way" (1965) and "Cast a Giant Shadow". Douglas actually starred in "Cast a Giant Shadow", in which Wayne made a cameo appearance and was co-producer.
Angie Dickinson. She blew into town while Sheriff Chance was holding Joe Burdette in jail and stayed on to become the Sheriff's love interest. "Rio Bravo" was an early film role for Dickinson and one of two movies with Wayne, the other being "Cast a Giant Shadow" (1966). Most known for her television roles, Dickinson also appeared in a number of movies, including the original "Ocean's Eleven" (1960) and the 2001 remake, and Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder" (1981). She starred as Sgt. Pepper Anderson in the TV series "Police Woman", which ran from 1974-1978 and appeared in a number of early television series, including twice in "Death Valley Days" (1954), three times in "Dr. Kildare" (1965) and once each in "The Fugitive" (1965), "Perry Mason" (1958) and "Gunsmoke" (1957). Maureen O'Hara was one of Wayne's favorite leading ladies, co-starring in "McLintock" (1963), "The Quiet Man" (1952), "Rio Grande" (1950), "The Wings of Eagles" (1957) and "Big Jake" (1971). Ann-Margret co-starred with Wayne in "The Train Robbers" (1973); Patricia Neal appeared with him in "In Harm's Way" (1965).
What happened to Dude during the Burdette stand-off, changing Sheriff Chance's plan to hold Joe in jail until the arrival of the U. S. Marshall? | "Rio Bravo" - The Duke at His Best!
|
He was kidnapped by Burdette's men while taking a bath at the hotel.. After helping catch Pat Wheeler's killer, Dude decided to sober up and help Chance in the Burdette stand-off. After being overpowered by Burdette's men while on guard duty, he decided he wasn't good enough anymore until Chance shamed him by comparing him to Colorado, the young hired hand riding guard in Pat Wheeler's wagon train, played by Ricky Nelson. While Dude was cleaning up and taking a bath at the hotel, Burdette's men jumped Chance and held Dude hostage while taking Chance to the jail to release Joe. When Stumpy shot at Burdette's men at the jail, the men holding Dude heard the shots and took Dude. This forced Chance to agree to an exchange of Joe for Dude, during which Dude jumped Joe, starting a shoot-out which forced Burdette's men to surrender. Stumpy saved the day by arriving and using the wagon train's dynamite to blow up the warehouse where Burdette and his men were holding Dude.
