Time Travel in Movies
The crew of the starship Enterprise go back in time to retrieve two whales thus saving their future. Which "Star Trek" Film is this? | Time Travel in the Movies
|
The Voyage Home. Trivia Bit - "The people that Chekov and Uhura ask for directions to the 'nuclear wessels' are not actors, including the woman who directs him to Alameda. The scene was filmed with a hidden camera on a San Francisco street." (Trivia courtesy of IMDb.com)
Dr. Evil has stolen Austin Powers' mojo and Austin must go back in time to retrieve it. Which Austin Powers movie is this? | Time Travel in the Movies
|
The Spy Who Shagged Me. Trivia Bit - "Dr. Evil calls one of his creations "The Alan Parsons Project", spoofing the name of a band that enjoyed popularity during the late '70s and early '80s. Coincidentally, 1999 was also the year Alan Parsons released his album 'The Time Machine', and a remix of the title track includes snippets of Dr. Evil's dialogue from the movie." (Trivia courtesy of IMDb.com)
In "Time After Time" (1979), we learn that legendary British author H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) has built an actual time machine, and that one John Lesley Stevenson (David Warner) is really Jack the Ripper, and he has stolen Wells' time machine. When the time machine returns to his lab, Wells goes after Jack the Ripper. In what city did he find himself? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
San Francisco. My favorite scene in this film occurs when H.G. Wells enters a McDonald's for the first time. After hearing the man in front of him order a Big Mac, fries and a Coke in a nasally voice, H.G. steps to the counter, and places his order: (Nasal voice) "I'll have a Big Mac, fries..." (Normal voice) "And tea, to go, please."
three. In "The Voyage Home" (1986), Kirk & Co. slingshot around the Sun to 1986, in order to bring some humpback whales back to their time.
In "Generations" (1994), Picard and Kirk find themselves in the Nexus, where Kirk is reliving elements of his life after retiring from Starfleet; the two of them later join forces to fight Dr. Tolian Soran on Veridian III in the 24th Century.
And in "First Contact" (1996), the crew of the Enterprise-E help Zephram Cochrane repair and fly Man's first warp ship, the Phoenix, while fighting the Borg at the same time.
In "The Time Machine" (2002), Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) constructs a time machine of his own. When his fiancée, Emma (Sienna Guillory) is killed, he tries to go back in time to save her. When his efforts prove fruitless, he travels forward, ultimately landing 800,000 years into the future. There, Alexander befriends a race of people who are peaceful and live off the earth. What are these people called? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
Eloi. The first Eloi that Alexander meets is Mara (Samantha Mumba), and they become fast friends, especially since she had been trained to speak in the "ancient" language of English.
In the "Terminator" films, there was a time portal in the year 2029 that allowed the Terminator cyborgs (and Kyle Reese) to go back in time, so that each could take on his (or in the case of "T3," her) mission in the past. But anyone going through the portal appeared on the other side in the nude. Why? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
Anything not alive couldn't go through the portal. In "The Terminator" (1984), Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) told Dr. Silberman (Earl Boen) that only living tissue could be in the time portal. Now, this is what puzzles me: I can see the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) using it, because its skin is human tissue, but the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) is made of a memetic polyalloy (In layman's terms, that's liquid metal). If the T-1000 is made of metal, how could it go through the portal? If it takes the form of a person, does it replicate that person so well, that it actually registers as a human and not as a machine? Please send your theories to my mailbox. Thank you.
"Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" (1989) chronicles the adventures of two dim-witted would-be rock star high school students (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) as they travel through the history of our world -- in a phone booth! Can you name the high school that Bill and Ted attended? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
San Dimas High School. Bill and Ted's history teacher, Mr. Ryan (Bernie Casey), once evaluated our heroes' assessment of history this way: "All you boys seemed to have learned is that Caesar is a 'salad dressing, dude.'"
By the way, I'm not sure if the other three high schools exist, but Esperanza High does; it is in Anaheim, California. I graduated from that high school in-- Well, I won't say. But it was years ago! :)
In "The Final Countdown" (1980), a modern-day US Navy aircraft carrier encounters a strange storm which takes the ship back to the days prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, in 1941. What was the name of the aircraft carrier? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
U.S.S. Nimitz. In the movie, the U.S.S. Nimitz (the flagship of the Nimitz-class carriers) returns to Pearl Harbor after the storm, and the crew notices that the base has changed, to the point that they recognize the ships in the harbor as pre-World War II vessels, including the battleship U.S.S. Arizona.
five. In all, Michael J. Fox appeared as three different versions of Marty McFly: The "Part I" Marty (playing guitar at the dance), the "Part II" Marty (the "original" Marty, if you will), and the older Marty (in the year 2015). He also played the older Marty's children, Marty Jr., and Marlene. A "sixth" Marty is mentioned in the alternate 1985, when Biff thought he was supposed to be in Switzerland, but we never see him.
In "Timecop" (1994), a cop named Max Walker (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is a member of the T.E.C., whose duty is to preserve history so that the timeline remains constant. What does "T.E.C." stand for? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
Time Enforcement Commission. In this film, Walker joins the Timecops after his wife, Melissa (Mia Sara) is killed at their home. In the future, we learn that the past could not be altered. But Walker's actions against corrupt politician Aaron McComb (Ron Silver) allow Melissa to live at the end of the film.
In "Freejack" (1992), a race car driver named Alex Furlong (Emilio Estevez) is thrown forward in time a split second before his car crashes during a race. When he reaches his destination, he realizes that his body is to be occupied by the soul of a dying man (Sir Anthony Hopkins). What rock star played Alex's pursuer, Victor Vacendak? | Motion Pictures Travelling Through Time
|
Mick Jagger. Yes, it was the singer of the legendary Rolling Stones! As Vacendak, Mick Jagger was ruthless in this film. In one scene, he walked up to a man's desk and picked up a decorative Fabregé Egg, talked about it in a soothing voice, noted that it was priceless, then he smashed it on the desk. Ouch!
'Donnie Darko' is the mesmerizing story of a young man who is visited by a mysterious time traveller in a demonic-looking bunny suit. During which decade does this film take place? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
1980s. Released in 2001, this Richard Kelly-directed film is based in the year 1988, weeks before the U.S. presidential election that saw George H.W. Bush victorious. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the title role, with notable performances from Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze and Jena Malone, among others.
1. In 'The Terminator', two individuals travel back in time from the year 2029, a nearly indestructable cyborg called simply a 'Terminator' (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a human being sent to stop the Terminator by any means necessary. The mission of the Terminator: to find and kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton).
30 years. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is inadvertently sent back 30 years in time, through a set of circumstances out of his control. He meets his teenaged mother and father in the year 1955, and nearly creates a rift in the space-time continuum as a result. Only through the assistance of Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) can things be set right.
Bruce Willis plays a convict who is sent back in time to find the source of an epidemic that will wipe out most of mankind, in the 1995 film 'Twelve Monkeys'. Who ably directs Willis in this compelling drama featuring time travel? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
Terry Gilliam. The story upon which 'Twelve Monkeys' is based is actually derived from a French movie by Chris Marker entitled 'La Jetée'. Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt also help make this film an engaging one to watch.
Vincent D'Onofrio stars as Sam Deed, a traveler from the distant future who has escaped prosecution for murder, only to find himself involved in another precarious situation with his lover from the present, played by Marisa Tomei. Directed by Brad Anderson, what is the title of this fascinating independent film? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
Happy Accidents. If you haven't seen 'Happy Accidents' yet, I strongly recommend it. The two leads (Tomei and D'Onofrio) give inspired performances, and don't miss the guest appearance by Anthony Michael Hall, playing himself, oddly enough.
Several versions of the classic H.G. Wells story 'The Time Machine' have made their way to the big screen. Who directed the 1960 version that starred Rod Taylor and Alan Young? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
George Pal. Okay, don't feel sad if you haven't heard of George Pal. Born Marincsák György in Hungary, Pal came to the U.S. in the 1930s and became a pioneer in stop-motion animation, specifically creating what he called 'Puppetoons'. Among those in his employ were stop-action legends Willis H. O'Brien ('King Kong') and Ray Harryhausen ('Clash of the Titans').
Several of the 'Star Trek' franchise films have involved time travel, including the 1986 film 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home', which sees the original 'Star Trek' cast traveling from the 23rd century to 1986. In which U.S. city does much of this story take place? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
San Francisco. Leonard Nimoy directs this film, one of the best in the series. Featuring the entire cast from the first 'Star Trek' television series, we are also treated to appearances by Catherine Hicks, Brock Peters, Jane Wyatt, Mark Lenard, Jane Wiedlin and Madge Sinclair.
In 1949, a version of 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court' was developed for film by director Tay Garnett, featuring the likes of Bing Crosby and William Bendix. Upon whose written work is this time traveling story based? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
Mark Twain. Hank Martin, a mechanic played by Bing Crosby, finds himself transported to Arthurian England where his knowledge of modern technology gives him certain advantages, or so he believes. Rhonda Fleming and Cedric Hardwicke are among the other actors who star in this charming film.
Whoa! What quiz about time travel would be complete without a mention of Bill and Ted and their excellent adventures through time? Most people are aware that the temporal sojourner Ted is portrayed by superstar Keanu Reeves, but which actor appears as his intrepid fellow time traveler, Bill, in 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'? | Journey through Time in the Movies
|
Alex Winter. When one mentions 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure', one must not forget to give credit to the most excellent George Carlin, who plays Rufus, the time traveling mentor of Bill and Ted. Bernie Casey is also fun as Mr. Ryan, the rather demanding history teacher of the two heroic title characters.
Thank you for trying this quiz, I hope you have enjoyed it.
