After singing in barbershop quartets and as a member of a duo, Canadian native Gordon Lightfoot went solo in the early sixties. He became part of the country and folk music scene. He recorded "Early Morning Rain" on his debut album in 1964, but it wasn't released until 1966. Ian and Sylvia recorded two of his songs, "Early Mornin' Rain" and "For Lovin' Me". They introduced Lightfoot to their manager, Albert Grossman. Grossman also managed Peter, Paul and Mary and Bob Dylan. Peter, Paul and Mary and Dylan both did versions of "Early Mornin' Rain" in 1970 as well as many other singers later on. Dan Fogelberg had early eighties hits such as "Leader of the Band". Kris Kristofferson wrote classics such as "Help Me Make it Through the Night", also recorded by Elvis on the "Elvis Now" LP.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is the last cut of side two of the album. The album consists of studio tracks recorded at RCA in Nashville combined with live tracks recorded at The International Hotel in Las Vegas. Although the album accompanied the release of the documentary film of the same name, it is not considered a soundtrack album. The rehearsal clips of the film show Elvis in Las Vegas with his back-up vocalists, The Sweet Inspirations, preparing vocals for "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The album peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200. "Bridge over Troubled Water" is also the title of Simon and Garfunkel's final album together. It was released January, 1970, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February. It remained there for six weeks. It was replaced at the number-one spot by The Beatles' "Let It Be", another final number one album cut for a band.
