Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The bassoon is a member of the oboe family of fingerings (as in they have the same, or almost the same, fingerings).

Answer: false

It's actually a completely different instrument.
2. Why is the flute considered a woodwind?

Answer: It was originally made out of wood

Generally, the flute is now made of a silver metal.
3. Which woodwind is used in more professional orchestras for tuning?

Answer: oboe

I always say it's because the oboe is so hard to tune! Usually, the oboe will play an A, the 'band' part of the orchestra will tune and then the violin will take the A from the oboe and tune the strings.
4. The only difference between an oboe and a clarinet is the reed.

Answer: false

They're completely different instruments with completely different fingerings.
5. There is something called a bass flute.

Answer: true

It's quite long and the mouthpiece is curved so it's not too long to play.
6. What is the lowest note on the average oboe?

Answer: B flat

...but there is the rare, new oboe which can play a low A.
7. How many parts are there to a normal flute?

Answer: 3

Most piccolos have only 2 pieces (the mouthpiece and the body).
8. An oboe can be played as a single reed instrument.

Answer: true

They make a single reed 'thing' which an oboist can put into the oboe instead of the normal double reed. Apparently, this is usually only used for jazz or when a clarinetist has to switch between oboe and clarinet quickly.
9. The flutes are usually seated WHERE in a band?

Answer: First row

I guess that's so the conductor can keep his eye on them!
10. What key is a bassoon in?

Answer: C

What is written on the page is the note it plays, unlike instruments like the clarinet.
