Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the second largest Christian group in the US? (The Catholic Church is of course the largest.)

Answer: Baptist

Protestant churches as a whole outnumber Catholic churches in the US, but Protestantism as a whole is so fractured that no one group comes close to the Catholic church's numbers.
2. Who were the first bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church?

Answer: Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury

Coke had been ordained in the Church of England. Asbury was ordained at the famed Christmas Conference in 1784 which founded the Methodist Episcopal church.
3. What year did the Azusa Street Revival begin?

Answer: 1906

This revival led to the modern Pentecostal movement. For three years services were held three times a day, seven days a week. The teachings spread throughout the country and the world. Today there are over 600 million Pentecostals worldwide.
4. Which American preacher is most often associated with the First Great Awakening (circa 1730-1755)?

Answer: Jonathan Edwards

Edwards' fiery sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is a classic from this period.
5. Which church had Martin Luther King, Jr. as its pastor?

Answer: Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia

The church, while still very active, is also part of the national historic site commemorating Dr. King.
6. Which American President was at the cornerstone laying ceremony for the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Construction began September 29, 1907. Since its first service was held in 1912, several US Presidents have been to services at this church.
7. Which Roman Catholic Diocese is considered the oldest in the United States?

Answer: Baltimore

The Spanish and French had brought the Catholic faith to the new world long before Maryland had been colonized by English Catholics. (The church records of St. Augustine, Florida date to 1594.) But these areas were subject to Bishops in Cuba and Mexico.

In fact, the Diocese of Louisiana, which had been established in only 1793, found itself without a bishop and (in 1803) part of the United States. At that time it became subject to the Bishop of Baltimore. Baltimore had been elevated to a diocese in 1789.
8. Reverend John Witherspoon, the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence, was a member of which church?

Answer: Presbyterian

Many Presbyterians were active supporters of the American Revolution. Rev. Witherspoon represented New Jersey.
9. Which US state had the first Baptist Church?

Answer: Rhode Island

While the state of Rhode Island is known, the city is not. Both Providence and Newport had Baptist Churches in 1639 but it is not known which was first.
10. Which two groups united in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ?

Answer: Evangelical and Reformed Church and Congregational Christian Churches

Many Protestant denominations have had various splits and mergers throughout their history in the United States.
