Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2000, which team lead the 18 game regular season in both offensive yards passing and in rushing?

Answer: BC Lions

BC Lions' quarterback Damen Allen had a very slow start, but ended up with a record breaking year. He caught fire in the second half of the season, ending the seaons throwing for almost 317 yards per game. Running backs Robert Drummond and Sean Millington averaged almost 140 yards per game on the ground to power the leagues most potent ground game as well.
2. Which CFL team had the league's stingiest defence in 2000?

Answer: Hamilton Tiger Cats

Hamilton led the league in 2000 on defence, only allowing an average of 316 yards per game to the opposition. Calgary's 'D' was second.
3. What was the highest score in a single game in 2000 compiled by both teams?

Answer: 106 points

Saskatchewan played Calgary to a 52-52 draw on July 28. But they then beat Edmonton on October 28th by 54-52, both games employing the new shootout format. This 'shootout' format for setting regulation time ties certainly helps run up the score.
4. Which BC head coach bailed out on the team halfway through the season, jumping to the XFL?

Answer: Greg Mohns

Mohns took a winning record with him from his time in at BC's helm, but the players almost universally bid him goodbye with smiles on their faces.
5. Who lost the Eastern Final on November 19?

Answer: Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The double blue from Winnipeg lost 35-24 as Montreal advanced to the Grey Cup.
6. Who set a CFL record for field goal success percentage in a single season in 2000?

Answer: Lui Passaglia

Passaglia went 40-45 in field goals in this his 25th and last season in the CFL - surpassing the old mark of 90.6 per cent set in 1993 by Saskatchewan's Dave Ridgway. Ironically, after missing only 5 of 45 in the season and going 7 for 7 in the two Western playoff games, he missed three in the Grey Cup before saving himself and his team by booting the winning points. Lui's last was the wildest and wooliest.
7. Who set a professional football record for the number of games played between scoring touchdowns?

Answer: Lui Passaglia

Ok, Ok, I'm a Lions' fan. Sue me. Lui Passaglia caught a touchdown pass in his very first game as a BC Lion, a 10 yard pass against Saskatchewan, July 22, 1976. In the final regular season game at BC Place on November 5, 2000, Passaglia lined up at QB from the (again) Saskatchean 1 yard line and plunged (Ok, ok, he was pushed) over for a TD. Thus he becomes the professional footballer with the unbreakable record of 24 seasons and 16 games *between* touchdowns.
8. Who was the only CFL coach to suit up and play on the field in 2000?

Answer: Mike Clemons

When John Huard resigned from the Toronto Argonauts at the end of August, Pinball Clemons was appointed as the diminutive head coach while still on the roster. He immediately 'retired' and did not suit up for the September 4th loss to Hamilton, his coaching debut.

But he gave Toronto fans something to cheer about two weeks later, when 28,724 came out to see Clemons' last game as a player in the September 15th loss to Saskatchewan. It is the only game he or anyone else in the season was both a player and a head coach.
9. What was the largest regular season attendence at a CFL game in 2000?

Answer: 53,248

After drawing 35,967 in Calgary for the Monday Labour Day classic, Edmonton and the Stamps drew over 50,000 in Commonwealth Stadium for the rematch on September 8th. Edmonton won both games, temporarily taking over 1st place in the West. Those Albertans take their football more seriously than they do hockey.
10. What was the lowest scoring game in the CFL in 2000?

Answer: 15-9

Hamilton beat the Alouettes in Montreal 15-9 on September 10th. Only one touchdown was scored - a 75 yard pass from Danny McManus to Archie Amerson, and the Tiger Cat defence put on an impressive goal-line stand, stopping Montreal's Mike Pringle 3 times from the 1.

Not bad in the CFL when the 'D' has to line up a yard off the ball to begin with. Also not too shabby when you consider that Pringle scored 19 rushing TDs and gains 1778 yard during the season - over than 500 yards more than the second place rusher, Ronald Williams of Hamilton.
11. How many times did a team in the regular season score 40 or more points?

Answer: 24 times

Interestingly enough, 5 games saw both teams score 40 or more points. How much do you like that new shoot out?
12. Hamilton beat Calgary in the 1999 BC Place Grey Cup. How did the two teams do against each other in 2000?

Answer: They split 1-1

On September 16th, Calgary beat Hamilton at home 41-38 in a shootout. On the last day of the season, Hamilton evened the score at 1 each, beating Calgary 24-22 at Ivor Wynne.
13. What was the lowest number of points scored by a single team in a 2000 regular season game?

Answer: 2

They were to be the Grey Cup Champs of 2000, but on July 20th the Lions showed the early season offensive ineptitude by losing 35-2 to the Stampeders. What a difference a coaching change and a running game makes. Not to mention, Damon Allen getting untracked with his 'career' season. Markus would be proud.
14. Baltimore/Montreal lost the 2000 Grey Cup. How many times did they go to the Cup in the 1990s (not counting 2000)?

Answer: 2

Think back to 1994 (their first season in the CFL) in BC Place when the Lions beat the Baltimore Stallions. Think 1995 when the Stallions won it all in Regina. Then think what happened to the Baltimore franchise? They dropped 17 Americans, added 17 Canadians and moved to Montreal for their 3rd season. So, this version of the Als went to the cup twice.
15. Which team had the longest unbeaten streak in year 2000, playoffs included?

Answer: Calgary Stampeders

Calgary opened the season with a 6-0-1 record, going the first 7 games without a loss. Montreal won their last 5 regular season games and beat Winnipeg in the Eastern final. But they couldn't put win 7 in a row together at McMahon on Nov 28. Funnily enough, it was Montreal which ended Calgary's unbeaten ways, winning 48-13 on August 25.
